Default Collector Plates

A mechanic told me that in Ohio you can get Collector liscense plates for any Corvette. With the collector plates E-check is not required. Hello long tubes, 52mm TB, etc. Seems too easy & too good to be true. Can anyone else verify or refute this claim? Would there be an annual milage restriction?

I have heard this too and am hoping to adopt it to my state as we have e checks ev. 2 yrs. The car has to be in certain books as a collectors car... check out the ohio dmv off a web search and you wil see what I am referring to...

I have 'em for my '88 street toy. These are Pa tags. They are "Collectible" and have no emissions limitations and have the inspection requirements that the DOT approves in your application. They are permanent, no need to renew. You could ask for a waiver on the windshield requirement, the bodywork requirements, whatever. You must get a "reconstructed" title to process them, and it usually takes a visit from the state troopers to verify everything is kosher, and a verification from an inspection mechanic, along with pictures and applications. I think it was like $200 or so. You can only run it once a week at most, and they prefer only parade, show or club use. There is no mileage limitation, but the DOT has been known to pull the collectible tags from someone who they can show abuses the limitations.

I asked for DOT-glass waiver (let's me run Lexan windows in the future), and a lighting requirement waiver (I'm thinking of turning the fog lamp indents into air intake ducts) heating/defroster waiver and a seatbelt requirement waiver.

At least in Pa it can technically be any car, the car just has to be in "show condition." They mean it too, the car must appear in show condition inside and out in the pictures and inspection. My interior is a little worn at 140k, but the exterior was stunning enough to mask it (proud papa talking here...). Now I think that if you tried to register, say a 79 Plymouth Volare, even one with 0 miles and nipples still on the tires, they'd laugh at you. But a Vette, sure, just be ready to give up any hope of daily use and drive it rarely enough so that the same cop never sees you twice. There's only a couple hundred of these tags in the state...

Polar, I'm not sure what the deal is now, but when I got the Corvette about five years ago, they were just changing the law. You may remember seeing a rusted out 1972 Buick Electra 225, or a ten year old, clapped out Dodge Diplomat with Collector's plates on them...that's what killed the golden goose. Anyway, it took me three different applications to finally get them. When I did, the lady told me that to qualify for collector's plates, the car had to be listed in one of the "collectable" reference manuals that they used in Columbus. Mine did. I asked her for future reference which one it was. Her answer: The Corvette Black Book! Well that only covers every Corvette ever made! Now, having said that, I'm told that they have changed the law. Again! So the best advice I could give you would be to call the DMV in Columbus and keep talking and asking questions of everyone there, untill you hear what you're looking for, then take their name. Send the application specifically to them. (it's a seperate department) That was the only way that I finally got mine.

Polar LT4, I'm under the impression that in order to get collector plates your car, has to be considered a collector car by the state. That said, it begs the question what's a collector Corvette vs any Corvette. The last time I checked (couple of years) I was informed that you needed a letter from a recognized source (dealer will do) that stated that the vehicle in question is collectable because etc. At that point you need to point out what makes your car collectable i.e. first year for L-98, last year for L-98, First or last year for LT1/LT4, GM designated it as collectable, only year for coupe, first year of new model etc. Any one will do. As you see you must get creative and then have your position substantiated by an acceptable friendly source. I haven't tried it yet but a friend has accomplished it with a 96LT4-ZF plain coupe. Maybe you want to research the law and go from there. See URL for Ohio Revised Code below. Good luck...Frank

here is your official answer... http://www.state.oh.us/odps/division/bmv/clectors.html
and a reprint from their page... General Information:
In an effort to ensure that all vehicles registered as collector vehicles are truly collectible, the Bureau of Motor Vehicles references the National Automobile Dealers Association, Classic, Collectible, and Special Interest Car Appraisal Guide or the 4th Edition Standard Catalog of American Cars 1946-1975 (Krause Publications) or The Complete Book of Collectible Cars 1930-1990 (Consumer Guide) to determine vehicles that are true collector vehicles. Although we recognize that a vehicle may be unique because of time, energy and investment expended by the owner, these publications are used in determining eligibility for collector’s license plates. Due to a administrative ruling, vehicle models not listed in the above publications may be considered collector vehicles if the applicant obtains documentation from the manufacturer that the vehicle was in limited production, is in demand as a collectible vehicle at the time of application or a sizable investment can be proven.
