Default OBD1, OBD2 confusion

I have a 94 which I thought should be obd1. Is the connector for obd1 and obd2 the same? I have a predator programmer for my 2000 vette and I can plug it into the port for my 94 and it will turn on. It doest get any communication with the ecu though. Does this mean that someone has put a 95 ecu into the car at some point? If it was a full obd2 I would think that I could get the codes with my predator. I have used it on several other obd2 cars to read codes. I am just confused because I am trying to read codes with the paperclip method and the connector doesn't have pins where A&B should be. Are there part numbers for the ecu I shold look for?

Any help would be appreciated.

I believe you actually have OBD 1. 94 and 95 were kinda transistial years. Full OBD 2 didnt start until 96. Im sure someone with more knowlage will chime in. I have an 89 so I dont keep up much on the later years.

From what I understand, 1994 model year uses the OBDII connector but is still OBD1. I may be wrong, but I remember reading this somewhere here the forum

94 and 95 are OBD-I...will need scanner with appropriate software, OBD-II software will not work....big goof found thru-out many GM model lines 94/5 is ''new'' connector on ''old'' systems.

My 95 has the obd2 connection, and the scanner I bought for it, a Actron CP9145, works quite well on it. It will give data and codes, with a description of the problem. It also works on my 97 chev. pickup truck, which I believe is obd2. The mechanics at the Chev dealership where I buy parts told me that 95's could be either. They had seen both on 95 vettes. Does anyone else have this setup?

All 95 Corvettes are OBDI with OBDII ALDLs. The Chevy dealer guys don't know what they are talking about.

It seems strange that the mechanics there would make up a lie, and tell me that they had seen something they hadn't.

Yes, It IS indeed STRANGE they would do that. NEVERLESS, they seem to do that ALOT! (And too many repair shops ~to my experience~ 'recommend' the GM Service shops able to properly diagnose our probs).

ADVICE: Trust this forum beforse trusting others that 'claim' to know.

The 95's had a few OBD II parameters that GM was using as a test bed before the switch over in 96.

My 95 FSM lists some OBD II codes.

If factory original for the 94 in question, what others told you here is correct and is an OBDI.

Newer hand held scanners are capable of reading all makes and models using both OBDI and OBDII w/the proper cable.

Yes, but the 94/95 cars need a cable that has an OBDII ALDL connector.

I too went out and bought a scanner that's been customised to deal with the OBDI with a OBDII connector.

BTW Most of the codes can be brought up on the dash.
