Don't confuse that with the power steering cooler. Look above the oil filter and see if there's a cooler sandwiched in there with coolant lines going to it.
Now i am interested in knowing, ill check this weekend... its hard to see whats going on under there when the car is 2 inchs from your face!
Is this the only reason that would cause quicker engine wear from having "cool" oil?
I believe that if you run too thick or thin of a motor oil that also has an effect on engine wear. For example, 20W-50 in sub zero degree temperatures... well actually you probably wouldn't be able to get the car started.
I am sorry I bothered the members with such a simple question. I have been driving Chevies since my first 57 210. I know the bow from stern and port from starboard. I won't bother you again. Frank

Frank, nothing was directed towards you at all. The directionals in the reply to your question were given in regards to another thread and a not so friendly conversation between a few forum members. Your question was answered and I'm 100% sure nobody is upset with you and you didn't bother anyone. Trust me, CFI wasn't implying that you didn't know which side of the car is referred to as the left side.
Thanks for the reply Dan. I was told this was the best place to get me up to speed on my recently purchased (three weeks ago) 93. I have been on here every night using the search engine to get the majority of info I needed. Receiving a reply like that without a smiley bent my nose a little to say the least. I will hang around awhile. I have been working on small blocks for over 40 years. Maybe I will be able to contribute something usefull. Later! Frank

You will soon learn that CFI is one of the most intelligent C4 guys in the world. He is very brash tho. It is the way he comes across. But he won't contribute advice unless he is sure it is right, so when he says something it can be trusted. He has never led me astray. You will find guys like Central Coaster, Neat, Jake, Cuisinartvette, Aardwolf, Bogus, Vader86 (who's website you need to visit), Vic'89, Pete K (our resident transmission expert), twisted, Makin U Shiver, Curveit, LD85 and many many more are the same way. These guys that I can remember from the top of my head and many others have all helped me tremendously because their info is correct, or they won't give it. They won't shoot from the hip. Trust them. (of course CFI is our resident customer service representative ) There is no amount of money I could have laid down to a mechanic or garage to get the advice and information I've gotten from this forum. You have probably found by searching and reading old threads who not to trust. I have been modding Mustangs and building Ford engines for 15 years, but this is my first Chevy. I've had it (an '89 vert) for about 8 months now and am way farther ahead than I ever thought I would be with it at this point. Just take all advice given and make a decision of what to buy or what to do next on your own. This is the most helpful forum I have ever found, and the for sale section is great. Camaroz28.com has a killer parts for sale section as well.

Hello,
Welcome to the forum and congrats on your new purchase. The C4 is a great automobile. Seems like you have a good handle on whats going on with 40 years of SBC experience, but don't be afraid to ask any questions. I too about about 5-6 years of experince and a degree in automotive techology, but I still ask stupid questions daily. Some of these guys like, Central Coaster, and Bogus can give you alot of very specific information on our cars that you may not be aware of, and most of them will only post a solution if they know the correct answer. Don't worry about CFI-EFI, he can be abrasive like 80 grit sandpaper at times... I accept his "know it all" attitude, only because he seems to know it all; at least he hasn't given me bad advice yet. The best way to utilize this forum is to take what you are told and apply it to what you already know... that makes problem solving and choosing go fast goodies cake.
P.S.... I read somewhere that Castrol Syntec oil works optimum starting at 190*F...
Oh and for whatever reason my car is running good this week.... knock on wood.
Before you buy a new temp sender, check for 3+ wraps of Teflon tape on the sending unit. Otherwise do an ohm check between the sender shell and the engine block.
RACE ON!!!
Very good point! Something I forget to account for...
I have an 87' that the oil temp usually stays about 195 while the water is @ 180 . . . However, when I "get on it " a bit & the oil temp gets over 210 my oil pressure will drop to "0" & the red light comes on when @ idle ??? Then after driving for a few minutes & the temp goes back down, my oil pressure will come back to about 45 ?

If it says no oil pressure, quit driving! Check your guage sender or put in a mechanical guage for testing, but for goddsake don't drive around with no oil pressure hoping it comes back.
My oil temp always runs cooler than my coolant temp on my 90 L98 with the oil cooler option. Today I put a new oil temp sending unit in. Drove around for 30 min or so. No change. I think my car has a 160 thermostat. I am going to change injectors tomorrow so it is probably a good time to change the thermostat. I hate to start this discussion again but what do you all think, 180 or 195?
In short, most would agree the stock thermostat is the way to go - 195*F. If you live in a year round warm climate where temps never get under 50*F than you can use a 180*F and run extra timing. You should never use a 160*F on the street, its just too cold.
