Default Driveshaft yoke ??'s--ZF6related

Pulled driveshaft today to change u-joints. Before i slipped it out
of the tranny I noticed i could push the yoke up and down. The
back end was still bolted on. It seemed a little sloppy to me. This
was the reason for th u-joint change. When in 6th gear and i backed off
the gas then accelerated i would get the clunk. I thought it was the
universals, but now not quite convinced that is the whole problem.
Should there be some slop at the front yoke?? Oh yea, there is some fine
lines on the external portion of the yoke as well---bad seal? The inside
of the yoke looks fine, all splines are intact and do not appear worn.
If i just change the universals will i be allright?? I changed the fluid
last year and used the GM fluid.
Thanks,
Matt

Very little movement is acceptable. Where are the scratches? As long as you have it this far part, I would rule out a worn tailshaft bushing, before reassembly. Also, you would be labor ahead if you replaced the seal, even if it isn't leaking. Just my $0.02.

If the bushing is bad, Can I service it? Most of the time it
seems the Zf's have to be replaced which is very costly$$$$$$.
Maybe others will post some info as well.
Thanks CFI_EFI

My driveshaft is out right now and I also have scratches around the outside where it rides on the seal. The seal wasn't leaking but I replaced it anyway. Where did the scratches come from?

I am assuming it is an internal bushing causing these lines.
I don't know if it can be replced or not ,I will check around.
Check your reverse switch while you up there,Mine is bad.
Like others have said, while your there........fix what's wrong!
The saga continues.................

I'd suggest going to http://www.zfdoc.com/ and asking them about it - they' seem to be the expertson all things ZF6.

Well ,took driveshaft in to a clutch and driveline shop here locally.
I am getting Spicer non-greaseable u-joints for $13 a pc!! They are going
to install for me and also balance the whole assembly. They also are replacing the yoke because of the lines on exterior of the shaft.Price for all
2 joints,1 yoke,labor,balance--$110. I think that is great,plus their
very close by.The shop also said the seal is what tore up the yoke, since i am replacing that to,it will be much better than what i had. Not saying anything
bad about Tom's Differential, but it paid for me to look around!
Just wanted to let everyone know. Those Spicers are BIG BEEFY B#st#rds!!!
Thanks to Scorp and everyone else!!! I e-mailed theZFdoctors aswell.
The driveline support beams look like the way to go.
THANKYOU!!!!!!!! :yesnod: :yesnod: :yesnod: :yesnod: :yesnod: :yesnod:

Yah thats normal for the seal to scar up the shaft. The front crankshaft seal will do the same thing to the harmonic balancer. I wouldn't worry about it unless it was leaking or you can catch your finger nail on it.

Yes,I could catch my fingernail on the scratches,So the shop said to
put on a new one. The new seal will eliminate any more for quite
some time. I don't know the Spicer ###'s yet,I am picking it up this
morning at 8am. I will try to post them ASAP.

The U joints that you can grease are good for a near stock engine because they should last longer since you can grease them however they are not as strong because they drill a hole through them for the grease to pass The tail shaft should have very little movment with the drive shaft removed see if you can move the tail shaft the yoke will have a small amount of play on the tail shaft but if you can move the tail shaft itself then you have a problem. I had to replace my drive shaft twice this summer I corkscrewed them. Plan on building custom shaft this winter that won't break but I know that then it will move on to the next weakest link and break something else no DAMM end to these modifications  :yesnod: :nopity
