Default Jasper engines- Pros/Cons 1987 C4

My 87 C4 needs to have the engine overhauled, due to excessive metal in the oil and oil filter.
My local Chevy dealer will sell me a overhauled engine from Jasper Engines. (original L98 engine)
The good part is the engine will have a 3 year/50,000 mile transferrable warrenty. Any problems and most Chevy Dealers will honor the warranty.
They charge $2500.00 for the engine exchange.

Are Jasper engines ok?? Are they a good company??
Thanks

They have been around for a long time, but I don't believe they are considered performance engines...

My experience with these engines has been terrible! put 2 in the same truck one time because the first replacement was garbage, and had another with very low oil pressure, and they were really hard to deal with with warrenty issues, leaks, etc. We stopped using them in our dealership for years after all that...(I've been a gm dealership tech for 20 years and prefer gm crate engines)

More years ago that I care to admit, I installed Jasper engines in customer's cars and added the desired go-fast parts. Except for a minor screw up or two that could come from any rebuilder, they made great building blocks. My only hesitation in giving them 5 stars, is the length of time since I've worked with them. They do in fact sponsor a Nextel Cup entry. I'm guessing they are trying to make a statement, there.

Jasper has a line of high-performance motors, (look here ) so you don't have to buy a stock replacement and build one up. Jasper now has a 3 year/100K transferable warranty that is good nationwide.

Our shop has had very good luck with Jasper motors for both foreign and domestics and we have even gotten the local rep to find motors for older cars. We just got a Jasper rebuilt 401 inch motor for a 65 Buick Riviera. Just had to go find some "correct" paint for the motor to complete everything for the customer.

I know several people I worked with that installed or had installed (correctly) Jasper engines that very shortly came to grief. Maybe my experience is way lopsided. Seems you could buy a GM short block for the same money and get a new engine. Jasper engines are remanufactured used engines.

I would be careful with what they are selling you. I had a Jasper engine installed in a Mustang GT many years ago (hydrolocked the engine in a rain storm). The engine ran OK, but did not have the power of the orginal engine.
If it were me, I would spent the extra $$$ and get a ZZ4, can't beat brand new.

I put a Jasper in my 1994 LT1 Corvette in 2003. No problems with the engine at all, great power, just like new.

They didn't have the Hi Perf line back when I was dealing with them. Their warranty was good back then, too, but nothing like now.

You should have really put them to the test with a 425.

Default Will a new ZZ4 be compatable with orig fuel system/smog california

Will I have any trouble smogging my 1987 C4 in California if I install a new ZZ4 crate engine?

Will my original fuel injection system be compatable with a ZZ4 crate engine?

How much more HP to the rear wheels will the ZZ4 have over the original engine L98.

I calculate about 44 extra HP ?

Thanks

I don't think so much. Same basic long block with a slightly bigger cam. Everything should bolt up though.

If you use a ZZ4 crate engine don't forget to change your damper from the old engine onto the ZZ4. It has a larger damper that will not clear the cross member. Ask me how I know? %^&)(*&^^&* I've used a ZZ4 crate motor in my 91 C4 race car [ NASA Events ] for 4 years. Still the same bearings. Have added SuperRam, cam, AFR heads. I just changed the heads so I don't know what HP I'm now making but with the stock heads, SuperRam, cam I made 307 at rear wheels. The engine has spent most of its time above 3500RPM. Good Solid Engine.

Default short block

look up pace Chevrolet (Pace Performance) they have a L98 short block for $1600 new. Jegs has one for $1500 remanufactured.
THe good wrench engine from Jegs is 1795
The bare block (use all your stuff) is $800 from Summit Racing
you need your old pistons (std bore) if they mic out good, and your old crank (turned .010) then buy bearings, timing gear set, cam, lifters, rings, and a set of vortec heads for $600, and have Pace drill them for your intake manifold, a gasket set, and you are all set. oh, and buy a harmonic balancer from Summit for $60.
letsee, $800, $100, $660, $150, $85, $50, $60 plus any ***bling***
Summit forged kits are $550, they are complete rebuild kits including rods. even comes with a crank, so if you buy the new block, you have essentially a brand new engine.
heck, send it here, i'll put it together for you and run it on my engine stand with a carburetor to break it in, and ship it to you
