ECM/PCM Tuning Section.... yeah or nay?

[Modified by Marcho Polo, 11:27 AM 11/20/2001]
I had run something in OT about a "Hot Deals" section simular to what http://WWW.anandtech.com has to let everyone know when some body found some good or cheap parts deals. Nobody seemed to be interested. I think it will take alot to get it done as the Moderators are pretty busy. (What with E-mailing us those nasty pictures and all.) :)
But, hope springs eternal

I hope that setting up the new section would be possible, and that there will be enough interest to warrant it.

I spend about 1/4 of my Forum time at DIY-PROM, trying to make sense out of what Grumpy is grumbling about...But they're F-body oriented, and some of our problems are Y-body specific...
I say let's do it!!! :D
I think we can fill it up pretty fast.

1) Many people buy cookie cutter proms. They drop anywhere from $129-199 and just get an expensive fan switch in return...or in worse case scenarios, they get a lower fan switch and timing cranked 12* advanced ABOVE what the factory intended at WOT, with no other changes to any of the other calibration. My '85 HT chip that was installed when I bought my car confirmed this.
2) People spend quite a bit on exhaust, induction, and TB's. If you would have first spent time realizing that YOU could change your ECM/PCM calibrations and then make each change meaningful, then you wouldn't even think twice about the initial cost of your own tuning setup. Each modification you make could be tweaked for maximum driveability.
3) Maximum driveability. Lots of people are misled when it comes time for recalibration. It is always, "What kind of improvements will I get at WOT when I let it all hang out with a ****** Rad-Man-Fast-Man chip?" After working on calibrations for my car, it is a helluva lot more satisfying having a super-smooth idle even with a lumpy cam than it is to have 5 more HP on the top end but have to keep one foot on the brake and one on the gas at a stoplight. I found that the more I tuned for driveability, the better my WOT was anyways because of how the computer uses look-up tables.
4) You will learn SO much about the various systems on your car. You will make fewer mistakes when tuning such as this...Cranking open the minimum air screw because you want a higher idle. Made the same mistake, but then I realized that the computer would try to override my changes because the idle speed is programmed into the computer, and all I did was introduce a superhuge vacuum leak.
5) Shoot down myths about what works and what doesn't. Without forum help including DrJ, Craig M, Dennis, Chris, and Jeff (kick me if I forgot someone, because I know there are about 5 more), my car would be sitting another 9 months. From the guys who helped me realize that I could be burning my own, to the guys who helped me convert to a newer system, to the guys who gave me places to find odd chips at reduced prices and the guys who told me I was doing well enough that I should sit down and have a beer  , I owe my thanks, and I could provide back as well.
6) It is darn confusing on where Tuning questions should be posted. Do you put it in C4 Tech, aftermarket parts and engine mods, electronics, or wheels and tires (had to go there)? Truth is, the questions won't get locked and shifted from one forum to another, because there isn't a definitive location for them.
7) It is just good, clean fun. -Matt-
