Default which cam with bolt on LT4

vehicle has fresh motor with:
6 speed
k&n w/cut lid
52mm tb
ewp
stock heads w/fresh valve job
1 5/8 long tubes
bullet cats
3"exhaust
magnaflow 2.5 axle back
4.10 gears
this is a daily driver an must behave as such.must have decent idle characteristics(i.e. 750-850rpm).must be able to cruise at 1500-1600 rpm in sixth without bucking and/or surging.i am after the most power i can get without having a high idling ill mannered beast to commute with.i am considering:
1.gm hotcam 218/228 on a 112
2.comp xfi 218/224 on a 113
3.lpe 219/219 on a 112
4.comp xfi custom 224/230 on a 113
5.other (please recommend)

I think the Hotcam is a good daily driver cam for the LT4.

#4 gets my vote.

I'm running a Comp Cams custom grind 224/230 605/622 112+2 (1.6). This camshaft with the right tune will cruise around like a near stock cam. You may not want to go so high on the lift with your stock heads. But, with 1.5 rockers the lift will be ~566/584.

Dual pattern cams such as GM's Hotcam isn't needed since you have a free flowing exhaust system. I'd go with number 4 as well or a comparable single pattern grind.

More here on dual pattern cams:

the xfi cams suck.. ask me how i know. go with a cc305(220/230) or 503(227/230) with 1.6's. they seem to be the most popular and make more than a hotcam. i had a hotcam in an 94 trans am and it ran hard although it was an auto with 2.73 gears.

ok, how do you know?

every result i've seen are more impressive than the other grinds out there.

i'd go xfi 218/224 with 1.5 rockers tho. should run great in a LT4.

cc503 is also a great off the shelf cam

i have the bigger xfi that is 230/236 that i also ran in an AFR headed 383 and it didn't seem to be as powerful as would have hoped. i would do a hot cam or 503 before the xfi.

Well i wouldnt qualify that experience as grounds to say that XFI cams suck. Maybe the power you got and were disspointed in, were due to other factors. How much power did you make?

I know a guy running AFR's on a 355 and siamesed TPI setup with a XFI 218/224 duration cam. He made 360 at the wheels. cam pulled to 6000 very well. 360whp on a 355 with that cam is pretty impressive. Everything has got to be there tho, from longtube headers to proper intake to proper tune

i think the xfi268 would be a great choice. its idle quality is mild compared to some 503 cams i've heard

George, Hotcam it and we have the tune ready to go if you decide to go OBD1. Drivability isn't as good as a stock cam, but you've driven my car so you know what to expect. Let us know which way you go with it.

your car has alot better "manners" at low speeds and cruising than mine.gm's one step above the hotcam(222-230 i believe)looks interesting as well.
the hotcam is proven.i am wondering if i can get more with only a small sacrifice in driveability compared to the hotcam.chris's car only feels lumpy below a 1000rpm.how much time do you spend there?not much.
anyone have the lpe219?

219 i have seen in many small block applications and seems to act bigger than the specs say. that may not be a bad thing. Driveability should be pretty good. somewhat like a hotcam but makes more power

i still think the xfi 268 cam is the best bet. guy made 370whp on ported LT1 heads with no real tune...it was very very lean. powerful cam with good driveability

Hotcam can be made to pass emissions with the right tune.

Once you say "DD" hotcam gets the vote.

Don't know if most people know about this site:

http://www.cmotorsports.com/engine/l...ft-design.html

Personally, I like this cam:

233/242 duration, .569"/.576", 115lsa

The high LSA makes for an great idle.
