My engine's timing is off. I used to run at a really high rpm so i rotated the distributor a little bit but can never seem to get it just right. What rpms should my 84 be running at and what is a good way to make sure my distributor is in the right position? Right now my car makes a lot of noise when i go to turn it off coming from the engine. It kind of sounds like pressure realeaving itself and the car choking... haha
Get it timed right. Do a search and you will find the proper method of checking and setting timing. It is easy, hardest part is finding the disconnect, it is in the big harness near the brake booster. Your search will turn up a thread that will walk you through it. After it is set, if it idles high do a search or iac and tps adjustment. Setting the timing, iac, and tps will probably fix your problems.
Learn to use the Search function, that is the Main Search function (Search, Advanced, Archive post (yes), select C4 forum)) and Go...

What does "I used to run at a really high rpm" mean? You used to race the car? You like to drive in an unusually low gear for the conditions? What is "a really high rpm"; 2500? 3000? 4000? More?

What rpms under what conditions? At the maximum shift point? Driving down the road at 30 mph? 60 mph? By "make sure my distributor is in the right position", do you mean how to check your tining? A good way to check the timing is with a timing light. In fact, I know of no other way.
The car was ideling very high when i went to try and adjust the distributor. Ill do a search and see what i can find.
I made the same mistake. Don't think "old school" with the TPI system. Timing is a seperate function from the idle circuit. I couldn't find it but there was an article in Hot Rod titled "TPI Tuning". It has the procedure for setting your idle speed. Someone here probably still has it saved on their computer. Time the car first and then set your idle speed. It is quite simple to do
