Default Bad switch?? HELP!!!

OK Im stumped....I have an '86 coupe. The ignition switch is malfunctioning. It started as an intermitent problem. The key turns the switch and all power comes on but it wont go all the way forward to engage the starter (into the springy part) It just stops and it wont start. Is it the switch or the rod that is in the column? Help!!

Very probably the switch down on the colomn. On the C4, they use the old system where the key/lock asm. is not the ignition switch. There is a nut and 2 5/16" screws that hold it on. Once you take it off the key should move fine (if the switch is the problem).

And you might get lucky. If it has come loose, it might have slid down far enough that there isn't enough "key" movement to push the rod to the "Start" position. If so, you can just slide it back up the column and re-tighten the screws.
