Hey guys, as some of you know im restoring an 1989 corvette and yesterday my final piece of carpet came in the mail. Im fairly confident that I could install the carpet myself but the idea of taking out the seats and the dash doesnt excite me. Instead of going this route I decided it would be best to leave it up to the professionals on this one.
I called a local place (sports car specific place) and they gave me a $850 estimate on carpet repair/replacement. (That includes sewing all the new leather onto the old seats as well.)
Just wondering if you all thought this was a fair price?
And last night i tried to take out the seats myself but I didnt have a breaker bar long enough to get down in there to pull out the bolts. If I didnt have a big enough bar how hard is it to take out the console box frame?
You don't need a breaker bar for the seats, open or box wrench, or 1/4" socket set with 6" extension will do it... center just needs side and top off, easy job, and $850 is way out of range, do it yourself and save, send $100 for a FSM (Helms) and go from there.

Hey man, I'm just finishing up on my 85. Replacing carpet, seats, door panels, door sills, visors, heat-a/c control unit, console lid, etc. It's not hard. You could probably do it over a long weekend yourself. No need to remove the dash, just a few trim pieces. I assume the 89 interior is basically the same as my 85 (think they changed in 90?), but either way it shouldn't be hard.
Seats are easy to remove with just a ratchet and extention. The only PITA I have run into is getting the rear cargo shade out. My seats were complete, so I didn't have to mount the leather or even the foam to the seats, but I'm sure you could find everything on these forums! You also don't need an FSM... I have one and tried to use it to remove the shade, but wound up finding the answer online.
Did mine two years ago and the biggest PIA for me was removing the sill carpet. Actually reinstalling it on it's plastic frame was a biatch also. Plan on a full weekend, do it yourself. You'll be happy you did. Not to mention the "I DID IT MYSELF" factor.
My Admiral '94 came with gray interior, and I switched it out to black carpet with red seat (GS style). The carpet is easy. You won't have to remove the dash. You don't have to remove the complete console, just the sides. I didn't remove the rear shade, but it might have been easier if I had.
