Om my to work this morning cel comes on I keep driving for about 3 or 4 hundred more feet then it starts to sputter and then dies I coast into burger king and thats where it at now it would crank back up and run for a about 30 or 40 seconds then go dead I then cycle the key 2 or 3 times then it runs again for a few minutes so I haven't got it home yet to run codes but Im thinking its fuel related you guys have any input or had this happen to you? It s a 95 coupe all stock but a K&N filter. Opti was replaced less than 30k miles ago.

Check the codes, they will help you diagnose the problem.

Mine is doing the exact same thing!

Will run fine for 10-15 minutes then sputters and shuts down. No restart till next day. Codes have varied each time. At first was throwing H16 indicating Opti, now throwing a 31? can't find that anywhere, FSM on the way. Fuel pump starts upon key on, can hear it.

Killed battery yesterday, replaced it, fired up, ran fine 15 minutes, then sputter, off, no restart.

Very frustrating.

Will do. I started it up after posting and actually drove it for 20-25 minutes at varying speeds, no issues at all, parked it and immediately tried to start.....no fire!! Pulled codes, (1) C12 (4) H16, H36, H42.

I bought an MSD Opti so thinking I will go ahead and replace that along with new WP, I'm at 80K on this 94, so it's probably time anyway. Other than that I am guessing ICM, coil, or fuel pump.

Let me know what codes your throwing.

I will pick up my buddy's snap on scanner Sun night I only hope I don't have the same codes as you I cant afford to buy an opti right now. the last one I bought the dealer installed in oct of 05 that was about 30k miles ago the sad part is I was trying to sell it on the classifieds here I dropped the price once I guess I would come way down just to move it now. But I will let you know what I find.

Well I pulled the codes and the scanner confirmed my worst fears code 16 and 36 OPti,Opti Opti !!!! I cant beleive that I only got 28k miles out of a new dealer installed optispark I had them replace plugs wires, water pump and optispark charged me $1258.00 and only 28 thousand miles later looks like I will be doing this one myself if there are any good write ups in here please point me in the right direction. the heater core write up was great and fixed me right up. Thanks for all the help guys. Does anyone know if the Ebay $140 opti's are any good? the dealer cost me $415 discounted from $502 I think i can do better than that this time.

Netguru,

Don't run get that Opti yet. I may have found my problem last night. Went out and she fired up fine after sitting for a few days, popped hood and was just looking around the WP area after she warmed up and noticed dampness accumalating. Could not figure where it was coming from so ran to get the Q-beam, shined it on the hoses and saw a pin hole leak coming from the throttle body hose, right next to the WP. Bingo! I was planning to do the TB bypass mod now I need to anyway. My thinking is when the engine gets up to temp and its on the road the airflow is keeping the moisture out of the opti, when shut off the flow continues till cooled down causing the opti to foul. Once dry after 24-36 hours she fires back up. I'm throwing the same codes.

Just something you can look for. The predominant opinion from the experts here and other sites is to go with the MSD Opti. If you want to stay stock unvented Opti, only buy the OEM GM Opti, do not mess with the chinese knock offs on Ebay. Partsladi on ebay has the OEM's for $305.

If my opti turns out to be OK, I may sell this MSD I bought last week.

I have been quoted 5-6 hours on the install of Opti and WP @ $75-$90 an hour by 3 shops in my area. There are many Opti threads on here where guy's have documented their replacement if you want to do it yourself.

Let me know what you find.

I will check that out Thanks for the info I was going to work when mine decided to just stop although it does fire up and runs just fine now but I would be to scared to take it down the road for fear of another wrecker call but I will go look and see if I find anything like you did that would be cool. I am going to sell the car regardless so Im sure the MSD is way more than I have to spend.
