hey guys i bougt a 85 in pretty good shape for a winter project.it doesnt need a lot,has a few minor issues.one that really stumps me ,the interior lights would sometimes stay on.open and close the door they would delay then go out.battery in car completely dead and when i put the charger on it interior lights on.open shut the door there out.go back this morning interior lights on again.it would seem its the off timer, anyone know where it is located and where to find one
If it IS the timer module, it's made of unobtanium - they're almost impossible to find. It's located under the dash on the passenger side next to the ECU and is a small black box about 2" on a side with a tab on the back to screw-mount it somewhere (although all the ones I've seen have been taped to a wire sheath). However, usually when those modules fail your center-console hatch button won't work either.
Have you looked at the door switch? It's very possible that it's gotten corroded inside and isn't breaking contact when it should be.
i will check the door switch ,they come on after the doors are shut and the lights have gone off, some time thru the night they just decide to come back on.i have all winter to figure it out .i will start with the door switches thanks
I'm putting my money on the timer, it's acting exactly the way my '85 did. Jay at Vette2Vette has good used ones, he tests them before sending them out. (815) 673-6200
The Courtesy Light Delay Module is a small module, about 2" square, located behind the passenger side dash panel (bread box) and typically taped to the harness. The old 1985 module part number is 1408-0625. A GM specified alternate part number is 1009-8435. However, neither of these parts are readily available.
These modules are pretty hard to find. If you do a search, there are many posts here on Corvette Forum about how to bypass your timer if it is bad (it'll work the lights just fine, but without the delay), and how to repair these units by replacing the circuitry components inside using Radio Shack parts.
You could also try vette2vette for a used one. I picked up one there recently.
Original part # - 1408-0625 (discontinued)
Alternate part # - 1009-8435 (no longer available)
