I have an 86 and the ignition key is becoming difficult to remove. So far I have always been able to get it out with some jiggling, but I am wondering if there is a mechanism to hold the key in when you are in the "on" position and it is out of adjustment.
Jiggling what? The ignition switch or the shift lever? I had a similar problem. The shift lever on my auto trans car was not going into park all the way.
I would venture to suggest that the tumbler is probably pretty worn out.
I suffered the opposite issue of no longer being able to put the key into the ignition lock. It left me with the unfortunate problem of not being able to start the car or get it out of Park without taking apart the console to defeat the theft lockout.
After needing a flatbed tow to my Vette's mechanic, I had the tumbler replaced. I would recommend getting a new unit before yours fails entirely.
Ok, I put the powdered graphite in there and seems to have done the trick, the key is going in and out pretty smoothly now. Just as a preventative measure, I did all of my other locks on the vette and the blazer. After doing it, I couldn't get the ignition key in the blazer to turn, it went in and out ok, but wouldn't turn to the on or start position!! I sprayed some silicone in there and now it works again..............
