Default Headman Long Tube Headers

Just installed these headers on my 85 and removed the A.I.R.. Put in a heated O2 sensor. The only thing unusual about this was that I was expecting a little increase in noise. Seems to be quieter and (this has to be imagined) runs smooter. Had to change title because I was mudled up.

What's the rest of your exhast consist of? Mine sounds very quiet with the factory cat and front y-pipe in place. And that's even with muffler eliminators. But as soon as I go back to the hooker front y-pipe and random tech cat, it's loud again.

Factory Cat. and magnaflow muffler with stock Y pipe. Cut about 18 inches off of the Y pipe to hook up.

Your factory cat is what's making it quiet. Hooker sells a matching 3 inch y-pipe. But it does not clear the trans pan on automatic cars. You'll have to chop and weld.

Have a 4+3. I was thinking of a dual Cat. I am sort of backing into a 383 one step at a time. I do not want to drop in a new non stock engine and have 1500 problems to correct. I have cleared the hurdle of moving the O2 sensor and clearing the AIR (pun intended). I think my next move is programing a chip and cliping the wire to the EGR. I have a chip programed to start without the CSV but have not installed it. I have been running with it (the CSV) unpluged and really no problems with the stock chip. It got down to 40 F one day here and I ran out to start it just to see what it would do. A little slow but it caught

Random Tech makes their dual exhaust system to match up to Hooker headers if you didn't know. I agree that your factory cat is what's keeping the exhaust quiet. Those original style cats are not very good for performance. Heck L98s with everything else stock but without mufflers aren't even loud.

If the dual system is more than you want to spend, the next best thing IMO is to run the hooker ypipe into a high flow cat, such as a Random Tech unit, or no cat at all. Then into the mufflers of your choice.
