I was recently rear ended by a new Colorado pickup and the insurance adjuster said that it would be totaled because of the gas tank was crushed and possibly the frame. Would the body damage + the gas tank equal over $4500 worth of repairs, or are they just pulling my leg?

Pics are needed to say but its likely totalled. Click on the Vette photos under my avatar if you want to see totalled.
Its almost to the same extent, but my hatch is in one piece. Did yours shatter from the impact?
Its totalled then. I got hit in the side. Spun around and drove through the glass. It was like a snowstorm hitting the windshield. They swept glass for 1 1/2 hours.
If the damage exceeds the current book value, it is totaled. It is that simple.
The exception is specialty insurance that has agreed value. Then you must exceed the agreed value (that was previously established) to consider it totaled.
Sorry about your loss

She told me exactly that. My 88 in its condition, including the 202k miles was worth $3800. I was saddened that it might have to be totaled. I may as well remove as many parts off it as I can or I'll buy the car off the insurance company, keep spare parts around for the 89 or possibly part it out so I can get some $ back. It was 100% stock aside from my tune. Its sad to see it go.

Be very careful what you remove before you buy the car from the insurance company.

I agree. The bright side is that you are here, and healthy enough to build/buy another.
Buying it back is a great idea. You can earn some "sweat equity"
In the parts for sale section someone just posted a back 3/4 of a '87 vette for $250. Could be a sweet deal for you and keep 1 more '88 C4 alive and well. Check it out. I'll shoot you a pm so you get an email in case you aren't on right now.
