my 85 has been in storage for a couple of months and I decided to start it yesterday and let it run for a while. After shutting down, i noticed a strong gasoline smell coming from the garage. Today, I checked the garage floor and no spots, but i started it up and let it run for a while again and found fuel dripping from the rear of the spare tire cover. too po'd to look further as I have started some other projects around the house, but was hoping to get your thoughts of the problem and the fix. My guess is a bad fuel line, any advice? thanks.
These gas tanks are very easy to get to- and the lines as well- you can drop the cover and spare tire in minutes and everything is there- you can also remove the rubber around the filler neck to expose some bolts that hold the filler neck/fuel pump in- a few lines around there as well- not too bad- I had to change my fuel pump- checked all the lines- took me and a buddy about an hour for the whole job
Gas fumes in the garage mixed with a gas water heater or gas furnace is a lethal combination. Even just gas fumes in the garage alone could be a problem. I'd keep it outside til it's fixed.
I had the same problem, it was a hole in the tank. I went to the local parts store and got some permatex tank repair.
It's a putty that is black outside white inside. You cut a little piece, kneed it to a gray color and stick it over the hole. Works even while the fuel is dripping out.
I also fixed an oil leak with some.
A very similar product is being sold by the Oxi-Clean infomercial guy called mighty putty.
well, assuming it is a fuel line that has gone bad... for whatever ridiculous reason (I have had the car for 19 years 57k miles and it has always been garaged and never seen the winter), do you think it is ok to use the following (found this doing a search in the forum)?
