I've heard a lot of pro's and con's about coilover's, but mostly positive inputs. I have my suspension pulled apart and am considering installing coilovers at least in the front; (better for 1/4 mile ET's with mono-leaf in back). Has anyone tried this set-up? and, anyone have problems with the coilovers ripping out their shock towers?
It depends on what your going to be doing with the car (autocross, drag, daily use, etc.) DRM says that their Coil-over kit (which I also believe to be one of the best, especially their "x-tra grip kit") provides fantastic handling and will pull nearly 1G in the skidpad. They say the trade-off is a pretty rough ride for daily driving. However, they will modify any of their kits to suit your driving "needs" :) So customizing the kit to provide a more comfortable ride is possible.
You mentioned your interest in a 1/4 mile suspension setup. You may want to drop the coil-over idea (which may have a negative effect on your quarter mile acceleration times) and go with DRM's "C4 Corvette QuickerQuarter Suspension". They revalve your shocks, add their trailing arm and camber rod brackets, and install poly bushings. The kit is priced at almost a third of what the xtra grip costs. May be just what you need. Good luck.
I have Callaway's COIL system on my '95 Vette.......
I would not do without it now that I have it....yes, it's a little harsher ride (better road feel), but it's noticeably better than the stock non-FX3 set-up.
As far as 1/4 mile times, I have probably achieved better 60 ft. times (on true street tires) than most people have with a softer suspension and no coil-overs on street tires and probably many drag radial drivers.
I've managed a best of 1.81 sec. sixty-foot time on my street tired/coil-over car. Each of my last 10 passes at the drag strip have had sixty-foot times in the 1.8's, with my normal in the low 1.9's. I do keep my front sway bar on also, so it's a stiff arrangement.
