Default engine choices??

my early 86 engine blew. now what? i am on a moderate budget and half but mechanically inclined. what are my choices given the stock ecm and tpi intake. my first inclination was 383 stroker but want some more insight from some pros.. car is very good condition otherwise and worth updating.

I am by no means an engine expert but this is my experience. I bought an early 86 with a blown motor with the plan of throwing a motor in and just driving it. I got a good deal on a 383 short block so i thought I would go that route. Then I fell down the slippery slope of engine mods, and I got into might as well change this and that while I am here. Like hey I might as well get new headers and Y pipe, and some new dart heads, and a centerforce clutch and flywheel, accel intake, then you need new injectors, and a custom pcm tune. Next thing I know everything is done and I got a car I paid $2000 for with a blown motor, that now has almost $6000 worth of motor in it. Not only that I also lost a year of driving it while the work was being done. Was it worth it, no not right now. What what I have done if I could do it all over again, either rebuilt a 350 with good forged parts and put it back on the road and did the mods a little at a time. Or even better yet I would have just thrown a GM ZZ4 crate motor in and drove it, and then just done all the other mods as time and money allowed.

can a zz4 motor be put in and run right with all other parts stock..ie ecm, tpi, stock exhaust as that is what is on car now. i'm not interested in heavy mods other than possibly exhauast headers. where is a good buy on trhe zz4 crate engine?

A ZZ4 is basically just an L98 so you should be fine. I've seen some posts on here before about where you can get a good priced short and long block ZZ4... check out the archives.

You might need a chip burned for it to take care of the cam in it, but that I'm not 100% on.
