I am new to corvettes with a 1984 Coupe. I want to change a few looks on this car and make it look like a 1990 model with the same exterior, but the interior the new style as well as the engine. This leads me to my question.
Can I take my 1984 block and heads and slap a TPI top end in place of the crossfire injection or is there more to it? If the block will work but I need to change the heads that will not be a problem. Thanks for any help anyone can give me on this.
It would be cheaper to just sell it and buy what you want. Body panels are not cheap... niether is engine parts.
Good advice. Why turn a $5000 vette into a $2500 one. Look around, you can find fix up LT1's for $5000 that need alot less work than you're talking about. CFI is, I belive, banned for, well, life.
STOP..
Its not worth the cost of installing TPI, especially since the gains are very minimum at best. They're are other things you can do to it rather than that with better gains. Do a search here there are plenty of threads. You can also visit http://www.crossfire.homeip.net/
The best bang for your buck is to port the intake, that is where the biggest restriction is. They're are instructions on the site I gave you of how to do it in the tech section.
As far a body goes it will cost you a bunch of money. Ask me how I know this?
Do your research and don't be afraid to ask a lot of questions, I do
If you must change it over a guy to talk to is Jim at www.Jimsperformance .com in Ellicott City, Md. he changed my Crossfire Harness to the TPI style and sold me the new ECM pretty reasonable. Pipe
If you change it over, atleast look into upgrading from TPI to a Superram isntead. The cost of buying stock parts v.s. better aftermarket isn't too much difference especially with the power gain you'll see. I think if you gonna go through all the hassel to convert over, make it worth it and do some more mods to complement it because TPI alone won't give you alot more power.
Thanks for all the replies. The only reason I am considering it is because the air filter box and cover are gone, and I know someone who has a complete TPI setup for sale. This includes intake, wiring harness, computer, distributer, MAF, and the complete pulley system. All of that for $500.00. Is that a good deal? This is not just a swap as I am having the engine rebuild and bored out with a newer cam and roller rockers. Any suggestions on Cam and Roller rockers that I can use?
Another thing to consider prior to using a TPI is the hood clearance. The 84's have the build in duct work remember. And consider your cold air intake options.
If your going through this whole process don't waste it on the TPI and take Shin's advice and go the superam route. The wiring harness is gonna be a bi$ch, but can be done.
