Over the holiday my 94 Corvette starts fine, runs for about 20 minutes and then starts to shudder as if its not getting any gas....studders, and then shuts off and won't start for another 45 minutes. It will crank, but won't start..
Does anybody have any ideal what this could be? At first I thought I could have had water in the gas... it had that effect.. I put in gas treatment but continues to do the same...
I'm not an expert by any means..lord knows i got problems with my own C4 but yours definately sounds to be heat related.it runs fine for 20 mins then dies and won't start again until its cool. Sounds to me that you have an electrical circut going to ground once everything heats up. may be in the opti spark(LT1 i'm assuming). i'm sure someone else will chime in with a more definitive answer for you.good luck
Sounds like a fuel pump. Once they cool down they can sometimes start, maybe get you a block or so and die again. Try putting a fuel pressure gauge on the shrader valve (on fuel rail) yet to see what it reads? Mine did the same thing..
I had a feeling that it was possibily the fuel pump because it felt like it wasn't getting any fuel, but when it ran again after 40 minutes, i had second thoughts. I guess I didn't know that the fuel pump cooled off and would start again...
Best thing to do is put a F.P. gauge on it, youl know right away.
Check it first before throwing a part at it just to be sure. Ive heard of other symptoms similar with the LT1 ign but Im not hip to them...COuld possibly be somethign else but Id put money on fuel delivery first.
I'd check the ignition module first. If the grease behind the module is gone, it overheats when the car gets up to operating temp and the car will cut off. Hopfully this helps.
How do you check the ignition module, and is it something i can do..? I'm not a mechanic, but im not afraid to jump on it if its possible.. I change pads, oil, and some minor repairs... so if this is something i can do, let me know..??
I also noticed that its not even starting now.... I let it sit for a week...and it turns over but won't even start now..

Thanks guys, I really appreciate your time..

The ignition module is attached to a aluminum heat sink on your right cylinder head. It's attached with two screws. If the grease behind the module is gone, you can get some module grease from Radio Shack (that's where I picked my tube up). Sounds like you've got another problem since it won't start now. Any codes? When was the last time you changed the fuel filter? Keep us up to date on your progress.
Just jumped my car and it started and ran for about 30 minutes without shutting off. Haven't changed the fuel filter for a long time, so i'm gonna start there... I'm gonna check the codes... Will a paper clip in each in of the code meter still work for the codes..?? I'm glad the car ran idling for 30 minutes, but I dare take it out in the street.... it has failed too me... and can't trust it...
Well, I was going to agree with either fuel pump or ignition control module (been there), but it's starting to sound like you need a new battery. What does the voltage at the battery read?
I agree with Lichen. It sounds electrical. Could be a battery or even maybe the alternator as weird as that sounds. Had one where I could drive for a little while then it would die. Would only start with a jumpstart and could drive a short distance and it would die again.
My solution was to pull the battery leads with the car running. In my case, the car died immediately. I replaced the alternator and life was good.
You could take the batter to autoparts store and ask them to test (some stores here in florida do it free). They should be able to give you an idea if the battery is dying or dead.

With a fuel pump problem, a gauge is cheap compared to the ignition.

Good luck.
Okay, I fess up... my battery could have been dead from me trying to start it so many times after it went limp, then i went on vacation and the car sat for about a month...so a jump was needed. However, i took your advice because it sounded logical. I jumped it again, pulled the battery leads and the car kept running. So i guess battery and alternatior is good !! Thank God..
So am i correct in checking the fuel filter next..?? How much is the guage to check fuel pressure? Or, should i just change the fuel filter altogether.??
Thanks guys, you are the best. I love doing my own work on my vette. Nobody loves hr like i do...
I once had something similiar. My problem was I had a slow leak in my waterpump and that messed up my Opti. Leak was fixed and changed Opti to a Pro Billet. Not sure if this helps your case.
I started my vette (jumped it again), drove it about 2 miles to Sears to have them check the battery (not charging)... Battery was bad, so sears replaced the batter under warranty - YES !!
So I'm thinking maybe this was the problem, NOPE !!! The car does its lil jiggly shake right as I was passing a shop. I asked the guy to put a fuel filter in, he said he'd do it for $20 if i got the filter. Autozone filter didn't work, so i'm going to get ACDelco tomorrow. When he removed my old filter, he said it looked NEW !!! I told him i want him to replace it anyway. He's also gonna replace the fuel pump.
So is it standard when removing the fuel filter that expels air pressure along with gas...?? Mine did, and the mechanic questioned that much air. He suggest its gonna be the fuel pump.
Here's my question: The Corvette book I have says the fuel pump is right near the top of the gas spout... The mechanic says its not, it may be in the gas tank. Which one is correct?? Any other advice about the car??
Also, I have a 91 Corvette, with a 94 LT1 engine, should the gas filter be 91 or 94, or does it matter..?? Same with the pump..??
You have lots of input here and let me add another. My 90 had a similar problem that turned out to be bad fuel injectors. Had to take it to the dealer to have several replaced. It was expensive so I hope that is not your problem. Most of the expense is the labor getting to them so I probably should have had all of the injectors replaced when they were in there but money was tight so I didn't. Been holding my breath since then.
Good Luck
$300 on parts and labor for nothing... Replaced the fuel filter and the fuel pump and its still doing the same thing..... Great !! The mechanic said that it could be the catalyic converter !!!??? Huh, its a lil old, it makes a lil noise down there when its about to kick out of gas....but the cataylic converter???
