Hi guys and gals, I was on here before but with my work on the car and a month in the hospital with double pneumonia things have been very slow around here. I have an 89 coupe with an automatic. the only mods I put on there is an MSD ignation. I have a couple of problems I need help with. 1)my radiator will not pull water out of the recovery tank. It have a 17lb cap on it. The book says 16lbs, will 1lb cause that to happen? 2)I want to change the tranny fluid and I don't know what kind will be the best . Youe advice please. Thanks for your help, I'm sure I'll b in here again being a rookie corvette owner. I read the archives until my eyes hurt but didn't see anything on either ond. I may have missed it, if so sorry to repeat.

Yes you'll need a 16lb cap 1lb is lot to over come, as far as the trans your dip stick should specify.. dex 3 I think but investigate that ,use standard petro based not synthetic unless you plan to flush the whole system....you'll just be wasting $$

Bob,
Best is opinional. I run whatever is the latest version of dexron fluid.
I believe dexron 4 is the latest. I personally run what is on sale. I believe that cool, clean fluid is what is important. I tear these transmissions down regularly, and see no difference in fluid, and how it affects the internal. Clean, and cool are the 2 things to aim for.
I suggest pressure testing the cooling system. Any leak, even very small, will prevent fluid fron sucking back in. You can buy a tester for $75, or borrow one from autozone.

Not from my own knowledge but the guy that does my trannys is a master with decades of racing experience and when I asked him about the "best" fluid he told me get a case of "what's on sale". As long as it is the right formula (double check you dipstick)
