My 1996 LT4 ZF 6 received a new shift **** for Christmas
Tried to remove the old shift **** from my car tonight got as far as removing the pattern cover then it said "nope not going to come off" My guess is that the I need to find some kind of retaining pin or the piece of metal at the very top is a wedge that I have no clue how to remove.
any suggestions, on how to remove the shift **** would be appreciated.
Some guys says to grab the wedge with a pliers. However that didn't work for me. What I did was drill a small hole in the wedge, then screwed a self tapping screw in it and it came right out with a small slide hammer!
I use a screwdriver and pry it out. When I put it back together I only knock the wedge in just deep enough to clear the pattern cover to make it easier for the next removal.
Spray a little penetrating oil on the "wedge" and let it soak overnight. Grab it with vice grips and pull straight up to remove. The fallback is to use the screwdriver approach. Just be sure to protect the leather shift **** (assuming you want to reuse, keep, or sell it blemish free).
Don't bother reinstalling the wedge. Mine has been out for years without issue. You can tighten the **** down just fine.
when I went to change mine the wedge would not budge, even with penetrating oil. I ended cutting the ****, split in the middle from top to bottom. The wedge came right out, of coarse the **** bound for the trash!
don't be sorry....i couldn't stop laughing when i did it. The wedge was in there so tight that when the wedge finally gave, my hands with the vise and wedge flew up full force right into my face...
it was my 1st time working on my C4. There should have been a warning label somewhere!
Thanks guys for the pointers. The oil did the trick wedge came right out. Special Thanks to 383_Proof kept my nose intac and did not punched myself in the face
Thanks to you guys...my t-punch came out with some small needle nose vise grips and some pretty hard tugging.
I grabbed the t-punch on the long ends...
then started tugging back and forth.
I didn't need the oil thankfully.
Once you get that part out....just un-screw the old **** and you are ready to install the new ****.
I decided to replaced my wore out stock **** with another stock leather beauty I was lucky to find "in perfect condition" right here on the corvette forum. "Thanks to (grinditout)
Sure looks purty now!!!
"I love the forum!!"
