If the sound is that of a small electrical motor then it is the ASR module under the hood. When ASR is controlling the throttle, it is effectively making the throttle cable longer and the noise you hear is that module. I'm surprised that you haven't heard it before. (assuming that what you are hearing is what I'm describing.)
Depending on the vehicle speed, engine torque and rpm, and lateral G-force, the ASR computer determines how to respond to an ASR event.
It can respond to an ASR event in any combination of these:
1) Individual or simulaneous application of the rear brakes.
2) Throttle close down with throttle cable to limit torque.
3) Retard the timing to limit torque.
Therefore, individual circumstances will dictate how it responds and what you may hear.
