Default Comp 503 or Crane 109831

So I'm going to order a cam either tonight or tomorrow to hopefully start my winter project.

As of now I have a set of AFR 190V heads with 2.02 valves and 1.6 exhaust valves. They have 58cc chambers. I'll be using Fel pro 1010 gaskets with .039 compressed thickness.

I also have a Superram plenum, runners and Accel base. Also have scorpion self-aligning roller rockers, hooker headers, and am going with either 2.5 or 2.75 inch true duals all the way back with an X-pipe and Flowmasters and high flow RT cats.

What I want to know is which cam you guys would go with...

Comp 08-503-08:
Advertised Duration: 276/281
Duration at .050: 224/230
Lift: .536/.544 (with 1.6RR)
LSA: 112

Crane powermax 109831:
Advertised Duration: 284/292
Duration at .050: 222/230
Lift: .543/.563 (with 1.6RR)
LSA: 112

I'm thinking I should go with the Crane cam, but I wanted to know if you guys thought that was a good choice? There's more lift with the Crane, but I don't know if a 8 degree difference in duration is good or bad compared to the Comp.

Any advice?

No, but I'll be watching to see what others say. I have a ton of different threads saved on cams when I was researching this. I will probably go with the 503 when I do mine, I want something just a little more than the HC. Here is one that covers many popular choices:

I am presently running the Comp XR276HR cam. I should have gone larger but it's a good cam. Has a nice rumble with my 383. Tuning is required for optimum performance.

You did'nt mention what gear you are using, auto or stick, intended usage(daily driver, weekend toy).
The comp appears to be a faster rate of lift. Some people have had issues with the scorpion rockers.

I knew I was leaving out a lot of info, sorry about that.

The heads are 190cc. Dual valve springs with lift good to .575 (based on installed spring height and giving .005 margin of safety)

The scorpion 1.6 RR have been on the car for about 6000 miles now without any problems...actually they seem to work great. No noise, no problems yet, and thats with some 6k revs.

The motor is a 350 bored .040 block with hypertenuic pistons and 4-bolt mains.

The car has a black tag ZF-6 with 4.11 rear gears that I installed when I first got the car.

This car is not a daily driver, and is more like a weekend toy, however, there are periods where i'll use it for 2-3 weeks in a row.

I'm leaning more toward the Crane seeing as the specs are almost identical, yet the Crane has more intake and exhaust lift.

Hopefully this has all the info and I didn't leave any more out.

I have the Comp 12-418-8 which is the same cam but with the early nose in my 408 with Dart Pro1 200's, Superram, 1.5 RR's, and Ross 10.3:1 pistons. I'm really happy with the idle quality and the manufacturers rpm range of 1800-5800 I felt was a good match for my car with the longer runner manifold design of the SR, and an automatic trans with a 2400 stall converter. I'm only using 1.5 rockers and it seems to make good power but I just got it running and have to finish the tuning and then I'll dyno it and get some numbers and that will tell the story. That same cam in a 355ci engine with 1.6's will be pretty stout I'd say.

With two cams having the same duration at .050, the one with the smaller total, or "advertized duration", will have a better idle and a little more bottom/mid range. I think Comp Cams has some Lobes with the same duration and more lift, than what you list. This would pick up some additional power. Of course you'd have to change springs.

If the .050 durations are nearly the same, the one with the tighter or smaller advertised duration will have a better idle quality and more bottom end power without sacrificing anything up top. The valve is, in a sense, staying closed longer, then opening at a quicker rate to catch up (and is caught up at .050). Any opening less than .050 is almost unmeasurable airflow, which is why most cam manufacturers give the durations at .050. IMO, it would be the better cam for you (the CC503) of the 2 you listed. Honestly, tho, they are very similar and you likely wouldn't notice a difference.

Well, I went ahead and ordered the cam. Seems the popular choice is the Comp 503, so I decided to go against the grain and try something different, and got the Crane 109831.

I would assume they'd be close to the same, and figured I might as well see what a little different combo would make.

I'm hoping for 350RWHP.
