Anyone ever seen or tried one of the Accel opti-sparks? Are the any better than the GM units?

Everything I've ever read on this site says stay away from Accel.

If it was me, I'd go with the new MSD unit.

Has MSD addressed the issue with the bolts coming loose? I think it was the rotor bolts.

I have an MSD Opti. According to MSD there are no issues with current builds. According to a few users on CamaroZ28 forum they had rotors come off during the first few hundred miles due to the screw coming loose.

It is recomended when you buy one to remove the distributor cover which you need to anyway to install the O-ring, and then simply remove the screw holding the rotor in place and put some red locktite on it and be done with the hazard.

I think the MSD Opti is a quality product and just went through some first run problems. I don't see many people reporting problems with them any more. If you have the money, go with the MSD, if not enought cash then get a factory vented model.

I just changed out my Optispark and installed a MSD. I held in my hand several other brands and without question, the MSD was a better made unit. It is also the most expensive but not by an unacceptable amount. To me, a couple of hundred more dollars to get a unit known for quality and longevity is well worth the extra money.

What were the issues (other than the rotor coming loose) with the early MSD's, if I were to find a used one?

Thanks

I've got a dynaspark on my 92 and its doing great. The dynaspark is a re-engineered optispark that eliminates the majority of the weak points on the original opti design. They are quite costly but I'm happy with mine.

If you do a search on Z28Camaro.com on MSD you will find lots of users comments. The only other thing was the initial units came with a regular round Oring versus the square rubber gasket type Oring now supplied. Many users could not get the old Oring to stretch enough to get into the groove properly and could not seal the Cap onto the aluminum body of the opti. I hear others that had not trimmed their cam indexing pin enough and had problems, but that was not an opti issue.

I think all the old ones are out of the system or already installed on cars now.

I've got a DynaSpark also....no complaints. After 2 GM units failed I refused to buy another one.

Dynaspark here - however I think they are out of business. Do a search and you'll find several folks that have come up empty looking for one.

If I had to do mine this year I'd get the MSD.
