Default Headers question

Ok all, I've been thinking lately of getting some new headers for my 85. I figured as long as I'm going for a new catback i might as well as replace the stock headers. Only problem is that i Live in the EPA's greatest home...California. So do you guys know of any places online that have emissions passable headers for the 85 vette? Or should i get some custom headers made? are custom headers even a good idea?
Thanks in advance

- Jack

Check Summit racing, they have C4 headers I believe (hedmann).
Not sure if they have an EO# for Vettes, but hopefully so. Know they do for IROCs, maybe you will luck out.

You can pass the smog check with headers provided you get a heated 02 sensor. If they do a visual inspection your screwed unless they have a CARB #.

And you won't even have that if you go with longtubes. No longtube is smog legal in CA even if they have air tubes and O2 provisions. Only shorties are and the costs vs gain on those is not worth the effort IMO. That being said, the only sure fire way around this is to swap back to stock manifolds temporarily every two years. That or know someone.

Since your 1985 doesn't have pre cats go ahead and go to a high flow main cat like Magnaflow when you put on your cat back. Also get dual outlet mufflers with a cross over on the rear Y. Look at www.corvettecentral.com for some ideas and systems. Forget about the headers, just upgrade everything else.

As mentioned, I believe CA. doesn't allow longtube headers. Another reason, among the other 1 million why CA. is nutty (no offense to anyone living there). Also as mentioned, don't get shorties. They're expensive and you won't see much of a HP gain, if anything. It's too bad, because TPIS makes a great header and they have the provision(s) built on the header for emissions. You can either use it/them or not.

If CA doesn't allow longtubes, it's really not worth the trouble installing shorties as far as any hp improvements. More visual improments, IMO.

I have an 85 also. The only ones I found that was more or less bolt on with all the stock accessories as alternator etc was the TPIS. They were very easy to put on and sparkplug change is not very difficult with straight plugs. Sparkplug change with angled plugs is very easy to change.I chose coated headers because they minimize the heat in the engine room. Have had good experience with those headers. Another thing with coated headers is that they do not rust as not coated ones.
