My car is an 87 with Aluminum heads. Manual says gap is at .035, but I've heard people say to put it up to .045. Scorp, care to answer?
P.S.- They're the AC Delco Rapidfire #5
Typically you run a larger gap with lower compression, or a higher output ignition system. You will want to run as large a gap as your motor / ignition combo will allow for best performance. Get too big and it won't fire.
For example, my old car, a 91 cutlass only made like 8.3:1 compression, the recommended gap for it was .060
FWIW, the stock gap on an '85 is .045 but there was an emissions recall that set it back to .035. Note: Emissions recall, not a problem recall...-Matt-
Re: Attn: SCORP! Question about plugs (HighHopes85)
there was an emissions recall that set it back to .035.
Is this a performance degradation emissions thing? In otherwords, if we passed our smog sniffer test, are we better off performance wise to go with .045 or .035? :D ~Juliet
If done right, emission's go down as power goes up. (Of course, to a point.) Sounds to me you will get a better burn w/ the stock setup if you have a .035" gap. A better (more complete) burn will result in more power.
The real question: will you really feel it on a stock setup,.... My guess is, you'd need a pretty sensitive butt to feel the diff.
