How do you remove the automatic shifter **** so as to remove the boot and replace the console trim plate.
Where can I get a new plate/trim piece at a decent price?
Thanks!
Hey not sure of the answer myself but i need to know as well. About the trim plate, i'm going to make a fiberglass console because the cheapest i have seen was $99 unless you go used on that auction site. Good luck i'll let you know how the console turns out if you want.
To remove the shifter handle, use two small screw drivers on each end and pop the center button off. Once the button is out of the way, you will see a small snap ring around the shifter. Remove the snap ring and the handle will slid off.
Close enough...I just bought a spring clip tool.
Thanks a bunch!
Now where can I get a new console trim plate at a discount...anyone?
I ordered one from thepartsladi on ebay for my '96. Cost about $94 plus shipping. It is flat black and has the rubber coating like OEM. Is matches pretty well, but ever so slightly different in gloss from the original. If a person didn't know better, they'd think it was the original.
Some folks have stripped and repainted their old shift console trim plate. If you do a search in C4 General, I believe you'll find threads concerning it.
I replaced mine over Christmas. If I can get my act together, I'll post pictures of the process--but it will probably be after this weekend. I just had a sump pump go out in the basement. Let me know if posting the pics will help.

Reason: Part HAS the rubber coating--not quite as thick as original.

I bought my shifter plate from a seller that HAS the rubber coating, not sticky like the stock one. very nice piece and even has the acc power label attached. it was kinda pricey at $100 shipped, but the quality is second to none. and it is not a "made over" stocker that has been painted. very nice piece.

My mistake. The one I ordered HAS the rubber coating too. It just didn't quite look as 'thick' as the original. It has a smoother feel and doesn't appear to scratch as easy. I edited the above post to reflect this.
I was also able to post pictures of the process of replacing the Shift Console and boot here. Hope it helps!

excellent, and from the pictures you posted, it looks to be the exact same one I bought. hope it looks as good in mine as it does in yours.
I am looking forward to that 20 HP gain from this....

...and I'm sure it'll look just as good or better and give you even more HP!
She had one listed on ebay last spring for $34 (or 38). Don't remember if it was new or not, but for $60, I could do an OEM makeover
I believe there's a Scottish influence there and the vendor is probably male, ladi(laddie) versus lady.Of course I may be wrong.
A good tern is hard to find.

Man I was you a year ago. Bought my '94, convert and the console was broke. It was my first project.
I just bought the same part from the same seller (ThePartsLadi) and the part doesn't fit all that well. There is a slight gap between the seat controls and the rear edge of the seat control opening in the shift bezel. Has anyone else encountered this problem?
My trim plate has a small area where the radio trim plate & the shifter plate meet that is raised just a hair. I'm the only one who notices. If yours is real bad exchange it. Remember...the price from GM, if you can get one is $300.
Good Luck.
