I've noticed it now even more since its been colder out that my 95 6 speed is hard to get in reverse. Had to sit there forever to coax the darn thing in reverse while leaving work today. Anyone else have problems like this? Is there a fix for it?
Try putting it back in neutral, pop the clutch for a sec, wait a few seconds and try again, may line up the gears better. If you already tried that and it's still hard to get in gear, it could be a clutch issue.
*What Vince said
*shifter to 1st gear, then reverse
*shifter to reverse, back to neutral, back to reverse, all with the clutch down
*put pressure on the shifter while slipping the clutch, so it doesn't pop out and grind (this last one works the best)
Technical Service Bulletins Summary
Make: CHEVROLET
Model: CORVETTE
Year: 1995
Service Bulletin Number: CAMP/95C16
Bulletin Sequence Number: 004
Summary Description:
GENERAL MOTORS HAS DETERMINED THAT CERTAIN 1995 CHEVROLET CORVETTE MODEL VEHICLES WITH 6-SPEED MANUAL TRANSMISSIONS MAY HAVE TRANSMISSION LUBRICANT TRAPPED BEHIND A "SHIFT SHAFT DETENT" WHICH MAY RESULT IN A HIGH SHIFT EFFORT INTO THE REVERSE GEAR. THIS HIGH SHIFT EFFORT MAY PREVENT ENGAGEMENT OF THE REVERSE GEAR. TO CORRECT THIS CONDITION, DEALERS ARE TO REPLACE THE "SHIFT DETENT BALL ROLLER" LOCATED WITHIN THE MANUAL TRANSMISSION. *TW
I just park my 95 in reverse when I know it's going to sit out in the cold. Shifting into reverse works flawlessly if the car is warmed up or if it's warm outside.
Re: Hard to get 6 spd in reverse! (BrianCunningham)
Thanks alot for that bulletin!! Thats exactly what it is doing...it doesn't grind, its just hard to get in the gear. Will the dealer fix this for free? (I hope so...)
I knew exactly what they used in it. It was the GM spec fluid.
I made sure of that when I took it in. Part # 1052931 I believe.
Glad you pointed that out ZBRA. Anyone that may be having the
10 minute oil place change their fluid should know them well
enough to trust them. And be sure they use the proper fluid.
Wow!! Thank god for this forum, I have the EXACT same problem!, Only when it is cold and have parked the car overnight does this happen. This morning it took me around 5-10 minutes to get it into any gear, after a 30 minute drive..no problems. I also wonder if GM will fix this for free.
If you have to push hard to the right to get it engaged into reverse you may have the same problem I had on my 96. I stripped my interior to save weight. When I removed my console my shifting to reverse problem totally disappeared. Since I now drive without the console I have never taken the time to investigate the cause of the interference between the shift lever and the console. (But I will when I put it back together to sell the car.)
You may be able to loosen your console and wedge it to the right and then try shifting into reverse to see if this helps. If it does help then you can investigate further to come up with a solution that will allow you to still use your console, such as using washers or bending attaching brackets to get the console to sit slightly to the right of the factory position, or cut the interference away if the leather boot will still cover the cut away portion. Hope this helps. Let us know. FrankLT4CE :)
Does anyone know if the dealer will fix it for free?
If it is a Service Bulletin, I believe the answer is yes. Service Bulletin repairs are paid by the manufacturer, so the dealer gets their money from GM.
Call the dealer, quote the bulletin number. They'll ask for the VIN to check their records to see if your car has had the service bulletin work done. If not done by a former owner you'll get an appointment and have it serviced.
Good luck. Don't let them snow you either. The final answer would be to call the GM Action Center and ask.
P.S. I've posted this question on the NCCC news group. I should have an answer by Monday for you.
