Turn a LT1 into a 383?
Whats all involved ? Does the motor have to be pulled to do this or can a assembly kit go in without pulling the motor? I see rods , pistons, rings and cranckshaft for around 2 grand. Sound right? Whats the difference between 383 and a stroker 383? Is a 396 considered a stroker? How much does this project cost for a pro to do at $90 hr shop rate? Where you satisfied with the performance results? Whats difference between long and short block? Thinking of next years project and can always count on you guys for info. Thanks!

Shortblock-Block with crank, rods, pistons, cam (usually),oil pump etc installed.
Longblock-Same except add cyl heads, intake.
You can get a good rotating assy for $15-1600 or so.
383 is a stroker. 4.030 bore, (standard bored .030 over), 3.75 stroke up from stock 3.48). 396 uses slightly longer stroke. Possibilities are endless as far as brands, prices, etc. Highly recommend stroking, youll never go back to a 350 again after having had one.

Yes.
Yes.
Same thing. Term stroker comes from the 383 having a crankshaft with a longer stroke than stock.
Yes. A 396 has more stroke than a 383.
396 = 3.875" Stroke
383 = 3.75" Stroke
350 = 3.48" Stroke
Picture a cost of the stroker kit, plus the labor to bore the 4" cylinders to 4.030", plus the cost of a rebuild. Also, some stroker kits will require some clearancing of the block to allow the rod ends to rotate without contacting the block.
Total cost of just the engine itself can cost $3000 to $6000 depending on parts used and associated labor costs. Heads will be extra .
Short Block = assemble engine block w/just rods, pistons, bearings and maybe cam.
Long Block = short block + Heads + Oil Pump/Pan + cam. In some cases, timing unit and maybe even a water pump will be part of the deal.

Is it wiser to just buy a new rebuilt fully assembled stroker motor and maybe sell my LT1 block? Though it would be hard for me to depart with my beast. Shes been good to me. 60,000 miles

Sweet! So stroking the engine gives you a taller deck height!!!
lol...just noticed that the pics are staggered....I take it back....not very funny when you are WRONG!

If there's nothing wrong with your engine and there shouldn't be at 60k and you just want some more ooomph why not just put a blower on there.$2500-$3500 and you don't need to pull anything out. If you want big gains in HP just stroking your motor isn't going to do a thing.On top of the cost of boring it,fitting new pistons and rods,crank,machining the block you will need to change the cam,flow the heads and inlet manifold,fit a different intake and runners,larger injectors and the list goes on.A decent 383 stroker like Lingenfelter is around $15000.
