Default Gutting water pump question

I'm going electric for the water pump, and doing away with two posibilities for leaks. 1:The water pump seal/weep hole water leak &
2: a possible oil leak at the water pump drive shaft on the front cover.
My problem is, I want to gut the existing pump without tearing it up. I've read about hammering the shaft out of the impeller from the front and then the bearing & seal from the back. I gave it a few whacks and only bounced the hammer off the punch and moved nothing!
I don't like hitting stuff anyway, so can this stuff be pressed out? Anybody got a good procedure for this? I don't want to cause any damage to the housing, because I need it for the new electric pump.

Yes, it can be pressed out. But, I just gave it a big whack with a hammer and punch.

read this post. the impeler comes off of the shaft. If you whack it while it is still on the car, you will be hitting it towards the engine. Not good.
I just took one apart the other day, here is my post with pics. The impeller is heated prior to putting on the shaft, so I heated mine the whacked the center, the shaft, out towards the back and it came out.

Thanks, I think I'll heat the impeller blade and give it another try.

I used a acetylene torch, as the propane tip was missing. Kinda overkill, but I heated it for about 20 seconds.
