Default Is this guy legit?

I normally hangout on C6 General, but thought I'd try this question over here.

There's a guy on one of the Gas Buddy forums who says he has a '94 ZR1 with twin turbos which, in his original post, said was putting out 1800HP and 2100#. When several of us called him out on that, he said that's what it dyno'd at. When asked for a link to the dyno chart, he said all dyno charts are classified. After a bit more give and take he than said they had their dyno mis-calibrated and the the numbers were actually 837/991 with 24.8# of boost. He insists he's not after low ETs, but rather top end speed. He said he's getting 210 MPH out of it now, but is shooting for 240, all of this NOT on a track. He also said he has $125K into it and is street legal.

Are these numbers possible or is he just blowing smoke? I would think if there was something like that out there, a lot of people would know about it.

Those numbers are possible from a twin turbo LT5. Has he had any engine work done? I'm guessing so. People can build 600hp naturally asperated stroker engines with the LT5's.

Those Quad over head cams help alot. A stock 2.0L Mitsubishi Evo 8(DOHC) runs 275hp Bone Stock at 19psi. Now tripple the displacement and you are looking at 825hp.

Now just because it is feasable does not mean that this guy isn't full of something. If he has dumped $125k into his car then he has way too much money. I've spent about 50k on mine and I know its too much.

I think the 837 hp @ 24.8 psi sound reasonible. However, if you've already thumped him for BS, how do you know those are his numbers? I also think the $125k sounds like a lot of money for what he is claiming--you can get a used Viper GTS and Heffner TT setup for about $70k (car and TT kit) and it is putting 900rwhp to the pavement!

what the hell for the 125K mods and the price of the car you might as well get one of these (http://www.lingenfelter.com/Lingenfe...06ZO6TTBGB.htm)

It's definitely possible. There is a member here with a single turbo LT4 car making about 700 RWHP on 18 PSI or so. 4 cam, 32 valve, V8, boost, and unknown displacement; that is a recipe for some pretty killer power. There are 281 cube 4V Cobra Mustangs making that kind of power, do it's definitely possible to do it with more inches in an LT5.

I would also believe the 125K tag. LT5 parts are incredibly cost prohibitive.

Try asking in the ZR1 section, see if anyone knows the guy.

I would doubt those claims are legit as the LT5 is an open deck motor.... or at least it would go "boom" pretty quickly at those boost levels...

ahh... I can believe the price if it is an LPE car.
the HP in the 800's seems possible if it is boosted up a bit more then normal. The TQ has me wondering. I would think it would be lower then the HP.

as for the 1800hp... if this guy cant tell the difference, he is full of ****.

the guy sounds flakey to me already, but on 24psi out of a relatively stock motor....

(meaning no headwork or cams BUT having the pistons and rods replaced with forged units, and at this point assuming MOST people would at least be going to a 368ci LT5 setup which uses a more traditional size SBC 4.00" diameter Cylinder liner and pistons)

I would think that 800rwhp would be on the low side.. that motor already has a 7200 RPM power band and the turbos if sized right for up top, that car would just be a nightmare.. boost is a wonderful thing! so yes very feasible to say the least but this guy may not even have a ZR1..

if he does.... and is just spending money having people build it for him.. yeah $125k is not unreasonable.. check out how much it costs to have a 368 or 415ci LT5 motor built and RR'd.. prepare to write a check around 35-45grand and that doesn't even cover the first turn of a wrench or weld for a fully custom turbo buildup let alone the cost of parts involved in such an undertaking.

if ya want rare fast cars... and ya can't build it yourself.. it is going to cost literally almost 6 figures to have it done right

Chris

Thanks guys. Didn't realize you could get that much out. However I still think he's a bunch of BS. He dropped from the 1800 to the 837 after someone else suggested that maybe 600 might be more reasonable.

I could be wrong and one should never say never, but there are just too many other things that he's said about both Corvettes and in other automobile related threads that makes him sound like a wannabee.

Here's some examples of his posts...........

I'll be pulling a 5000 LBS U-Haul trailer hook to the "79" j-10 JEEP 4X4 / 258 c.i.. my Wife will drive a "04" Ford Ranger. Got the gut feeling it gonna cost me $400.00 in Gas from Orlando to Arizona. U-Haul trailer cost me $825.00 for 9 days only.
as a Driver for a company in Orlando, Florida. I was making $11.37 per hour, 40 hours a week total $454.80 and at $.34 cents a mile, $380.00 a week. Sure was good money. Grand total $834.80 a week or $3339.20 a month. to pay for my own gas was $342.00 a month. The company went for Chapter 11 after working for them for 9 years.
That would be cool, If they have the third lane open for High speed only. Like the one in Germany. I was in Germany two years ago and Drove a Porsche Carrara Tubro at 247 MPH. One time a Lamborgini zip pass me going 284 MPH. I've seen lots of car having 1000 to 2000 Horsepower and Able to do 350 MPH. When you go high speed you must have your light on and If you see a car in your lane a mile away, You must flash your lights for that person to move out of the way and Must have high insurance to cover youself.

Maybe he ment Kilometers per hour. Porsche turbos, until just recently, topped out at 185mph, even though the speedo shows 200. Porsche speedos are notorious for being off on the top end.

Just ask him to take a pic of himself next to his car with the hood open.

He would at least have access to the car then for sure. Assuming he doesn't photoshop it.

His answer when someone suggested he had the two mixed-up:
I had all most forgot about it, It was two years ago. In Germany, Both cars were highly Modified Race Engines and We took the liberty to race it on autobahn. I didn't know about the Lamborghini, Until it pulled into the Engineer shop where the Porsche I tested. They have BMW, MB, Ferrari, & so on. Anyway, So far no one has broke the 350 MPH or even 300 MPH yet.

Yea I remember when I was on the autobahn racing a UFO with a top fuel dragster..... wheew whatta run! I think we broke 450mph, but I couldnt really read the speedo from my retnea's flattening.
Or it coulda been the 1/2lb of mushrooms I washed down with 4bottles of absinthe....

I think this feller is suffering from a disorder where you cant differentiate daydreams from past events.

I thought I posted this before, early on. I certainly typed it up... Anyway, to the cost, it's possible to sink $125k into a TT ZR-1 certainly. There are a few places that TT'd them in the past. Lingenfelter did 4 cars, to the tune of about $50,000. Plus the cost of the car. That could put you at or over $100k, then whatever else the guy did to it.

Callaway did 3 TT ZR-1's. Two were Super Speedsters, which I seem to recall were in the 1/4 million range. The other was a stockish bodied car (two huge holes in the hood for the intercoolers to breath). I don't know what that one cost, but I'd love to own it!

As far as power, I believe the Callaway cars were in the 750whp range on pump gas. I don't recall specifics, but I'm pretty sure they were over 1 atm of pressure, I think actually low 20#'s? The Lingenfelter motors were 368ci vs 350ci of the Callaways. I don't know what kind of power they put down but I believe it was in the ballpark of the Callaways.

Recently SGC did a TT ZR-1, again I believe in the $50k ballpark. I don't know the power but I believe it was in the ballpark of 800whp.

So the adjusted cost and power that guy mentioned is possible. Though a twin-turbo ZR-1 is quite rare. With the subsequent info, it sounds like the guy is just a ******, though.

As an aside, I would love to see one of those TT cars in person. The idea of a twin-turbo LT5 gets my heart pumping faster. I'd especially love to see one of the Callaways in person. In photos the workmanship looks incredible, and I'd love to see one with my own eyes.
