CAGS jam? ZF6 problems
I have had CAGS disabled for about a year, no issues until now. I was leaving the freeway, came to a stop at the end of the off ramp and it just would not go into first or second. From nuetral it will not go to the left at all, so its not a clutch problem, but I checked the hydraulics anyway. Transmission fluid is about 1000 miles old, and the fluid level is ok. All other gears work fine.
I tried plugging the CAGS connector back in, and drove around a bit to see if it would let me shift (had to start from 3rd
), but it didn't help anything. My best guess is that CAGS jammed somehow
, but I'm not sure, so any insight to this problem would be welcome.
zr1fred is correct... it's not your CAGS. With CAGS initiated, 2nd and 3rd gear would be blocked out... not 1st and 2nd gear.
What oil did you put in the transmission?
Crazy as it sounds... check to see if the case magnet hasn't somehow broken free from it's holding area about one inch aft of the drain plug hole. I've seen two other cases (no pun intended) in the past which a piece of magnet worked it's way over to the shift rail linkage area, both of which resulted in disabled 1-2 shift rail actuation.
Drain transmission oil into clean container using paint strainer to catch/filter out larger size debree particles which may be suspended in the oil.
You should be able to stick your finger up into the oil drain hole and feel just aft of the hole the presence of a one inch disc shaped magnet. if no presence of magnet is felt then it is safe to assume that your 1-2 shift rail is likely suffering from a very rare case of Magnitosis-Jamitice.
If so, you can either spend $400-$800 to have the $5 magnet replaced or put some serious force into several 1-2 shifts until the magnet becomes pulverized returning 1-2 shift functionality.
