I have noticed that it is very popular for people to take their vette to the drag strip and check out power combinations , performance and other aspects of their cars. It just seems to me that this car is not designed to be a quarter mile automobile it is more suitable as a road racing automoble due to specially designed and tuned independant suspension and low profile maximum traction tires. I have to admit drag racing is fun but I like my track a bit longer than just a quarter mile at a time
You are right, the Corvette is a great road race or autoX car. But the GM designers did even better than that. When the designed the C4 they gave it suspension that works great for drag racing too. You can basically put an animal motor in a stock suspension stock body car and it takes it and delivers the power to the pavement better than any other mass production car that I know of. I can understand wanting to participate in other forms of racing with a Corvette, but don't forget to take note of how good the Corvette works on the drag strip too.
Not only is drag racing fun, it is also a great way to rate your modifications. In road racing you can get beat by a Toyota Corolla. In drag racing the Corolla is in your rearveiw mirrior before you shift into second

How many cars are???

Whatever blows your skirt up! Personally, I made 161 quarter mile passes in my Corvette this year. That's why they make more than just vanilla ice cream. As long as you enjoy your Corvette, it makes little difference how you do it.

Good example of what C4 capability is the latest Popular Hotrodding has article on 1989 auto with a twin turbo small block street corvette that run nearly 160 in the quarter on michelin radials. Pretty much a stock suspension...incredible.
I like autocross and want to try road racing, but drag racing is very accessible. My track is open four days a week in season and its a decent (although not perfect) way to compare cars since it is a standard distance. If there was a road course I could run any Wed, Fri, Sat or Sunday for $12-$15, I would.
Also, the fact that I can drive the 4 hour round trip with my AC on getting 26 mpg and still run 13's in a stock car is cool too.:)
I have never raced or taken my car to the drags. I would like to; I think it would be a real kick. I'd love to see what my LT4 would do. I have always wondered if it hurts the car to drag it? When I say "hurt" I am referring to the drive-train or engine? It surely can't be good for it but perhaps not doing it real often might not be too bad? I admit to being a newbie to dragging and would appreciate your opinions. Thanks :seeya
If it doesn't get exercise, it'll atrophy. Be carefull, though. You may get "bit" by the bug. It is hard to cure. I've been diagnosed as "terminal". Enjoy!
No worse than driving it hard on the street. Depending on the track you might have more traction but on a stock-ish car with street-ish tires that shouldn't be a problem for the car. At least all the traffic is going with you, not against you...
As for drag racing, that is what I got into first b/c that is what I started out with(in a way street racing got me into track drag racing). But anyway, since I got my vette and it seems very suitable for auto-x, I am going to go with some freinds from my muscle car club, and see what kind of driving I can pull off. It seems really fun, but I really love drag racing too.
Designer Imagines A Corvette That Looks More Like a Corvette Than the Corvette
