Default cam dowel pin question

I just bought a Crane 103891 cam, and it apparently cam with the LT1 dowel pin in it.

Question is, what do I have to do to run it on an L98? I know I have to knock in the dowel pin, but how far? Also is it something I need to do precisely? In other words, can I just use a hammer and tape measure, or do I need to be a bit more accurate?

The extra length over the L98 cam is there to drive the LT1 accessories.
The length is important because of what the pin locates into

For a L98 as long as it doesn't hit the timing cover length is not important.
I put a LT1 cam in one of my L98's and did not touch the pin;
it hangs through the cam gear further than stock but does not cause any probs.

When I installed my Accel 74219 Super Ram cam in my L98, I mounted the cam gear and tapped the pin inward untill it was flush with the gear face.
