Default Am I asking too much

Hi all,

I need opinions please.

10 years ago, I bought a pristine L-98 (oil pan to valve covers) from an owner with a lingenfelter setup. This engine came with his 86 which went right to lingenfelter and this L-98 was teken out there. He oiled it and kept it air tight for 10 years or so until I bought it.

I decided I don't need it anymore and wanna sell it. What will the new owner need to do to make sure it's ok and what is it worth or what should I ask for it? Is $1000 fair?

$1000 might be a little steep for an L-98 with iron heads and no intake, but it never hurts to ask.

The engine itself would probably be fine with 5 fresh quarts of oil, priming of the oil pump, and a few turns by hand (plugs removed) to make sure everything still rotates properly.

$1000 sounds ok to me. How many miles are on it? Even without the intake, you should treat it as a SBC long block. You could slap a carb/intake on it and drop it into anything that an SBC fits.

Spray some WD-40 or other light oil in the cyc and let is soak a day or so before you hand turn it over.. that way your ring will be free and maybe if there is any rust, will assist in make the rings and piston slide over with out breaking a ring.

I would just restart it up like a breakin procedure, run and change the oil, keeping it at a high idle for a while. Don't want to flatten the CAM.

Hi guys,

Thanks for chiming in. This thing has less than 700 miles. My understandin g is the original owner drove it to the location where the engine got pulled.

I have an extra manifold that goes with it. I guess I should have said that. The one I now have is ported and this manifold is almost new too.

Appreciate the help :-)

With respect, I am local and often see similar running engines in the Valley Trader for a song. You may have a nice engine, but head and cam technology has come a long way in the last decade or so.

Best of luck on the sale, give it a shot for a little while then consider the price.

I built a hypereutectic 350, with a hot cam, all receipts for machine work, etc and only like 10 miles on it and got less than what your asking just last month.. Too many motors for sale.

It would probably be a little more desirable if it had the 113 heads

Those valve covers look great. They should be worth $200, if you can find someone doing a resto or just a show car. Sell them seperately.

GM sells basically the same thing for about $1300.00, don't they? And their's comes with a warranty. There really isn't anything too exciting here. You basically have a truck engine, but with a two bolt main block, not set up to take a factory roller cam, low compression cast pistons, and garbage 624 iron heads. Even with it's age, I wouldn't be afraid of it, due to the way it has been cared for, but I would expect to get it at a healthy discount because it has been sitting so long and there is no guarantee (is there?). Unfortunately, this isn't fine wine. I would think the only person that may hold special interest in this, is the one that has the car that matches the VIN stamped on the block. To anyone else, it is just a run of the mill, (pun intended) low perf, Gen 1, SBC.

Why not go $1000
You can always go down if needed but I would say that a stock engine with 700 miles should be worth that
