Default L98 Fuel Injector Replacement

I am replacing the injectors on my 87 auto. The car's previous owner performed some mild mods and installed either 32 or 36 pound injectors, which are overkill for the setup. It runs quite rich now and gets, at best, about 22 mpg when babied on the highway while making only slightly over stock HP.

We have a set of 26# Bosch injectors off our "spare" LT-1 engine that have been sitting in the garage for a little over a year that I would like to put on (the "spare" engine had about 40,000 miles on it and I would guess that the injectors had the same). I know the L98 takes 24# injectors in stock trim, but I feel like 26# would be a lot more appropriate than 36#!

How can I check to see if they are still good before I tear into the car to install them? Is it even a good idea to try to reuse them? (naturally I would prefer to use the 'free' injectors that I have than to shell out a couple hundred dollars for new ones.) Are there any fit/compatability issues in using the LT-1 26# injectors in my L98? Is there anything special we should do to prep them before install since they have been sitting around for so long?

Thats a lot of work involved to be putting in an unkown injector. We have a local guy that cleans and tests them for $15 each and I am sure thats a good investment. If you can datalog the car, maybe you can get someone to burn a chip to correct for the injectors. A lot less labor. I think Alvin at Pcmforless charges $175.

Stock injectors are 22lb. Even 24# is often reported as too rich. 26# injectors may not be what you want -- especially for the trouble to install them. Only a tuner can tell you if your car is running like it should -- especially with non-spec parts!

Check eBay or rebuilders -- if you don't want to pay new pricing for 21/22lb'ers.

Sell your used ones to recoupe some cost.

Stock are 22lbs(actually 21.5) My 383 only uses 26lb injectors.I would try and exchange them for some correct ones.Incidentally Alvin charges $250 for an '87 chip but I think you would be wasting your money as it sounds as if your other mods don't warrant it.

My mistake; I was going off the Mid America catalog which is misleading and makes it sound as if the stock size is 24# for the earlier cars:

The Bosch injectors are stock parts off a 94 LT1 so I guess they are 24#, then, not 26 as I thought.

Your "spare" injectors should be ok on a MAF car. BTW they are 24#. Put an AFPR on it for fine tuning if needed.
