Default Door adjustment

My doors on my 84 are hard to close and require lots of force on the handle to open them. To close the I gotta slam them real hard once or three times. They fit real nice as far as the body lines and gaps to the front hood/fender and rear pillar. I dont want to drive up to a car show or restraunt and spend 30 seconds slamming my door on my nice car. Any ideas?

Sorry I will throw this out there. Like I have said before I am not to sure about the diferences are, but the princapal should be very simular. There should be 2 adjustments. One on the bady and one on the door. They should both be 35 tq's bits. As you slowly close the door hold alittle pressure up then down and see if it needs to go up or down. Then the loosen the catch on the body first moving it which ever direction it needs to go. If it maxes in one direction and it is still not smooth go to the door. Little movements at a time then checking for alignment. Keep in mind that the odds are the bushings in the door hinge have worn down and the catch are what is keeping things lined up on the door to body when the door is closed. You will probably have to find a happy medium probably. I hope this helps.

There are several good docs, do some searching on the forum archives... also your pins could be bad as well as the door out of alig.
96slow6 has some points, but you will need to be carful, also a jack under the door helps to make things more stable.
If you cant find anything email me and i can send you Bloomingtons R&R for C4 doors... good doc and the procedure works

also, forgot to add that if you look at the Tech Tips C4, there is a doc that has the adjustment info

Pure speculation but sounds to me like there is simply too much pressure on the striker. Like the striker might be to far back or too high or needs reshimming?. That to me is what would cause handle to be so tough to pull provided something else internally isn't binding it. Also, make sure the upper door guide pin is lining up correctly. The final hinge, striker/latch, and guide positions are all interdependent (and the glass seating).

Don't know what proper procedure really is but just went through the effort not long ago on an 84. Repainted and doors had been removed, new weatherstrip, regulators refurbished, glass out, new door panels--you get it, like starting over. One door was a breeze and is great. The other was just like yours essentially. I played with front hinges to get fore/aft/up/down/in/out--many times. Still had problem like yours. Although I wanted to blame the new weatherstrip, I got the best results by adjusting striker and I had to add about an 1/8" shim to it--concurrently, I had to adjust my window glass "UP" seating several times too. Mine just had too much pressure on the roof weatherstrip. All these ajustments and readjustments were a pain but just take your time and decide not to get frustrated. When things get too intense, walk away and come back and don't take shortcuts. Bottomline: when it is right you will know it. If you have to force it, it isn't right. Not much help ugh!
