thanks for the reply corvette cris! acually,i bought a delco battery at the dealership and when the car wouldn't start i took the battery back and got another new one,and i had the voltage checked which read 12.4 volts.so after installing it thyere was no change--no start, lights work, wipers work.there is no security light, just check guages, tire pressure.what can i do to ingage the starter?---thanks---john
I have an 87, I'm not sure about the 90, but they have either a fusible link on a bolt behind the battery (along with about 7 other red wires) that goes to the ignition switch, or a fuse in a block of fuses near the battery. Almost all of the power to the car goes through the ignition switch which is really 3 switches. Check the fusible link/fuse that goes to the large red wire on the ignition switch. Since some lights come on, your ground is probably ok. Wiggle the battery cables at the battery, you may have a corroded connection from the wire into the lug. Trace the 12v power from the battery through the firewall connector to the ignition switch and after the ignition switch. The electrical diagnosis manual is extremely valuable because it has the circuit diagram, color of wires, location of parts, and a diagnosis description for common problems. Do some testing and ask more questions if you need to.
I had the same problem on my 91. I studied the wiring diagrams and everything pointed to the L.C.D. fuse. It is a 5 amp located on the fuse panel in the first column (the hardest to see). I believe what happened was, when I took it to get painted, the folks there tried to jump it with a portable power booster. I think they fried that fuse. I changed the fuse and BAM! it cranked right up. On a side note, my aftermarket radio wasn't working either, so I pulled it and the 10 amp in-line fuse was blown too. Everything else seems to be operating normal with the exception of a parasitic draw that i've yet to tackle. A special thanks to jfb, and everyone else who pitched in on my original thread.
