Default tips for intake cleaning.

well my car just broke 180K she is running fine ( motor is only 2yr old)
but it seems a bit slugish, im sure they dident clean the intake well when they replaced the motor.

So I ordered a a upper gasket kit today that includes the gaskets for the runners and complete TB gaskets. Now what do you guys recomend to clean the upper intake runners and TB? My plan was to use carb cleaner and some large pipe cleaners. But wanted to ask the pros to see if they had any input..

thanks

I used carb cleaner on the plenum and runners along with long nylon brush. For the throtte body, use throttle body cleaner and a toothbrush. Remember to take the IAC out of the housing below the throttle opening and clean the IAC pintle, spring, and inside the IAC housing including the small air port. Should be as clean as a whistle when finished. Rmember not to use any RTV on the intake gaskets. They install dry, just remember to line them up correctly and make sure they seal good to preven vacuum leaks.

I have found it usefull to use some high grade neverseize on the the gaskets this will help to prevent any vaccum leaks and in the event you have to take it apart they will seperate a lot easier and should be able to salvage the gaskets. We have had good luck with this over the years and no leaks. WRO87

You can test the injectors if you will have the plenum and runners off. There is no good way to clean the injectors without the proper equipment.

You can remove the two bolts holding the two fuel lines to the block. Remove the four bolts holding the fuel rail. Pull the injectors out of the intake manifold still attached to the fuel rail. Hold the tip of the injectors above the manifold holes. Connect the battery if you disconnected it and have someone turn the key on to prime the fuel rail. The injectors should not drip at all. If one does, it or all need to be replaced. You can also ohm the injector coils.

Years ago,I took the runners, plenum and intake manifold, since I took it all off and brought it to a machine shop. They hot tanked it and steamed it out..It came back looking brand new. There is no way to clean the grime off at home without doing alot of scrubbing and spraying, which makes a mess,is tiresome, and requires alot of manual labor.

If you want the BEST,cleanest job, call your local machine shops and ask them if they have the means to clean aluminum intake parts in a tank or hot steam machine,I forget the cleaning names. You might spend 25-45 bucks, but its going to get the parts cleaner than you ever could.

Btw the TB,you can clean at home with a old toothbrush and spray cleaner. You can leave on the TPS and IAC,etc and scrub and clean yourself in a few minutes.
