Default 86 problems

I just got my car back from having a blown motor. The motor is a 95 block bored.030 with the stock l98 heads converted to suit the roller cam. Also has a cam of which I know nothing about and of course new pistons and the air pump was gutted. My problem now is that the car idles at 11-1200 rpm. We have been checking out the problem and found that it is not my MAF sensor or any relays and that the problem is mechanical. Most likely a vacuum leak somewhere on the intake but I was wondering if the smog pump being removed had anything to do with the idle because the computer still sees the smog pump as being in the car. Another thing is my gas mileage went downhill to about 11 mpg fairly certain that is because of the leak though.
Any thoughts would be nice thanks

A 350 is a 350..Did they put back on all the stock TPI stuff ?? If you shoot WD40 or carb cleaner around the intake does it change the idle?? A vaccume leak will cause a choppy idle(or hunting) as well...Who did the work ??? If you had it done take it back and have them do it right..

all the tpi stuff is original it did have a rough idle but it was the tps that was causing that we have been spraying around for a leak but no luck. I was saying that there might be a leak because if it is past the maf the o2 sensor will be reading that there is more air than what the maf is reading and the ECM is dumping more fuel. Just my thought tho

With limited info, the first thought is a vacuum leak as you have deduced. Poor mileage and a fast idle make me also think of a defective or disconnected ECT sensor. The sensor in the front of the intake manifold. If the ECM thinks the engine is cold, it will send a rich, as in choke on, fuel mixture and call for a fast (cold) idle. It costs nothing to check.

That would be my guess too. If the sensor is plugged in find someone with a scan tool to check the sensor readings, this could save you a lot of time.

Good luck, Paul

You can learn a lot with just a simple ohmmeter, too.

Another cool trick to check for leaks is to get a hose about 4 feet long and stick one end near your ear. Then probe around with the other end and any leaks will be magnified and easily located.
