Default Oil Temp Warmup...

Question.....I only was able to idle the car in the garage.

The water temp got to operating temp on the dash guage.

The oil temp didn't seem to move much.

THe oil temp was always a little lower than water temp but I never noticed which got hot first and how long after they were at full temp.

Just want to know if I should pick up a oil temp sending unit or not.

Can anyone tell me how much after the water temp gets to normal, how long after does the oil temp catch up?

mine takes quite some time to warm the oil up just idling in the garage.... it warms quickly when driving.. but idling doesn't put much stress on the engine

Thanks, I'm always looking for trouble where none exists. Hopefully when I can drive it around, I can get the oil heated up.

Same here -- takes forever to warm up the oil at an idle.

If you have oil pressure than do the "old school" fix......

Put tape over the guage

Been there. I have plenty of pressure. It was working before I built the engine. My concern is that perhaps I did something, as I cut six useless wires, that may have effected something else.

I also turn up the radio when I hear a noise.

Well, thanks for the responses. I'm just trying to make sure that I'm no worse off than when I started it.

Funny story. I'm currently on open headers. I fired the car tonight to ensure I took care of the small VC leak. Scared the crap out of my daughter,8, she went running into the house. She tells me someone walking a dog also got scared.

at 40 degrees F and lower the oil temp is approximately half the water temp, until the water temp hits about 150. After that, the oil temp catches up quickly and they cross paths at 200 degrees (oil temp = water temp). Over 200, the oil temp starts to rise until it is 20 degrees warmer than water temp
