I have a TransGo shift kit with 2,000rpm TC in my '88 700R/4 and like to tap the brake pedal before dropping from OD to D as this unlocks the TCC.

I'd like to know from Pete if this is a worth while action.

its seems to shift like ***, Its like it shifts way to soon, and jumps from 3rd to forth alot. and never seems to be in 2nd for long.
feels boged down all the time, today i shifted it myself and it felt great! like it had ALOT more power.

btw: my trans only has about 12k miles on it and shifts smooth, so I dont think anything is worng with it.

If it is not abusively done, it does not seem to hurt it. I did see a trans where the sprag exploded, but the driver was an animal.

I don't think manually shifting it will hurt your tranny, but it sounds like the TV cable is out of adjustment.

I manually shift mine at the drag strip. It doesn't seem to have caused any problems.

It sounds to me like there is something wrong with it. I'd be heading back to the rebuilder.

Contrary to what has been said, one of my ricer friends did that with a new 2007 Honda Civic automatic and blew up the transmission 2 months later. Could have been from all those neutral drops. Those are the worst thing for a torque converter. Luckily the car was well into the warranty period with under 20k miles.

Well, I do drive my auto like a stick at the drag strip because stock shift points are 5200. In order to get the best ETs for my setup, I have to shift it at about 6400. I had my 700R4 rebuilt about 7=8 months ago after I burnt the 3-4 clutch pack and haven't hurt it yet shifting it like that, but as soon as I dead hook, my D36 will probably be the next to go.

Manually shifting won't hurt but you should check your TV cable adjustment

I had a 700-4R behind a 500 horse 383 and I manual shifted it all the time. Everywhere. No problems at all. Later installed a B&M shift kit for engine braking and full manual. Worked great with no reliability issues. Three things break trannys the most. Heat, Neutral drops, Rocking a car D/R/D/R.

i was on a site yesterday and for the life of me i cant remeber what one it was(linked off of a site, off a site off a site, ect...)they were claiming that manually shifting a 700r4 manually through low and second changes the line pressure in those gears to reduce slipping for heavy duty applications like towing and stuff.is this true? i thought the line pressure was controlled by the pressure relief valve,low/rev booster valve,tv booster valve and the tv valve itself. how could this be possible by selecting the gears manually.if true i dont see how manually shifting your car could be anything but good for it if your hossin it around

I've seen myself on several cars the automatic transmissions become ruined after prolonged manual shifting. The neutral-drive drops tear it apart the most, but as long as you are simply shifting between forward gears I don't think it affects it very much at all. If you screw something up you could always try out those electronic paddle shifters Twist Machine developed, they allow you to manually shift your transmission from the paddles on the steering wheel (F1 style) or simply allow your transmission to shift itself in full automatic mode when you do not wish to be bothered shifting. Only downside is that it reuires an electronic transmission, which in turn requires an aftermarket control unit so this method could be slightly expensive.

As stated above , a quality shift kit gives you the ability to manually shift up and down with auto function in drive.
Next step up is full manual where you have too make every shift ; no auto.
