I am pricing out this as well, pearlvett. I am currently looking at two options:
1. Stroker 406
2. LS2 Swap
My fear on the LS2 swap is that the labor is going to get ridiculous, due to all of the custom things that need to be done. Would get awesome gas mileage, though. The labor charges are what have me looking at the 406 Stroker. I am going to stay fuel injected (most likely Super Ram intake). But to handle that power, I am also looking at having my race shop rebuild the 700R4 to handle the power and have ordered sil_dwn_it's solid rear end. In addition, I am also looking at having a 6 point roll bar installed, so I can go below 11.5 in the quarter. Here are some rough numbers I am working with:
Motor $ 10,000
Transmission $ 2,000
Rear End $ 5,000
Brake Upg $ 1,000
Roll Bar $ 2,000
Misc Costs $ 1,000
Now, I know I could have gone out and picked up a C5, but I already had a C5 Z06. I really like the look and feel of the C4's. So, I saved the 86 that I have and am going wild on it. I don't see myself ever selling the car, so the amount of money that I am going to sink into it does not matter that much.

450-500 at the crank or at the wheels?

If you say at the wheels, I hope you dont plan to drive this thing on roads that often.

Just get a good built 383. You wont make any decent horsepower with tuned port but the torque will be outstanding. Had a built L98 383 in a 92 camaro with a shift kit in the trans. She would do 170 flat out in a camaro so in a C4 you'd be right fast.

Something I read about my last trip to the desert...

Kept the TPI, but bigger runners and some other stuff too.

There are many swaps going on using the Gen III and IV engines.. if you notice my sig... My Chevelle has been converted over to a Gen III LS1 with a Viper T56, I did the swap on my own and in my garage...

I think I have seen a few thread on a LSx swap into the C4 on this forum and if you go over to a few of the others. there are many to research and find information. If you have ever driven a Gen III or IV C5 or C6.. you know what power there is and how easy it is to get it up to the HP rating that you want.

If you find a low mileage pull out complete with all of the ECM, wiring, accessories and all... it can be a cost effective swap.
