Its not enganging with the oil pump. Keep trying, you will get it, but don't force it...

You probably spun the pump a little when you pulled the distributor the first time. You may have to rotate the pump shaft back a bit with a screwdriver.

You have two things to consider.
One; for the distributor to drop in and the rotor match up you have to start with the rotor about two plugs back.As it engages with the cam it will turn clockwise and reach the correct position.
Two;it needs to engage with the drive on the oil pump.Look at the cut in the pump drive and how it engages with the distibutor and guestimate. If it's way off you can turn the drive with a screwdriver.
One guy's answer was to push down on it and have his buddy crank the engine.
First times always a bitch
If all else fails, don't force it.
Bit like sex really!!!

You need to use a long flathead screwdriver and flashligh. Move the oil pump shaft so that it fits back like it was. Or rember which direction the rotor was pointing when you pull it out, as the shaft turns as its pulled out, and put it back and it will rotate where it as pointing.

If all else fails, just turn the engine over so that #1 is TDC. Make sure the timing mark is at 0*. Put the distrubitor in pointing a little toward #3 cylinder and it should slide in anf be pointing towards #1 or at the rear left point on the plenum.
