Polishing is a little more work than I care to put into them but I use simple green or a product called engine brite it is for cleaning aluminum engine like motor cycles makes them look good but if you are willing to spend hours of rubbing they would look better yet.
I use never dull(or something similar) I just wipe it on, let it sit then wipe it off. Somehow mine were black, looked like somebody had painted them, because my yellow shocks had black over spray.
Haven't got to the front yet, but on the back, simple green, followed by laquer thinner, then 180 flap wheel in my die grinder, then wet 400, 600,800,1200 and then get the buffer out. spent about an hour after sanding and they look almost like chrome. I also removed the die flash from the forging process. I know who's gonna see the back...call it practice for the front.
go to napa and get some alum-a-brite or an aluminum cleaner. Do not use the stuff that says it is safe on clear coat, you want the etching cleaner. Spray it on and hose it off and the arms will look brand new.
In essence, it sounds as though those that use product's like Mother's, etc. are actually polishing the A Arms. Were they polished from the factory? I thought for sure that they were clear coated. ?? What do you think?
I just got mine and spent 1/2 a day cleaning all the front, suspension, engine compt. I soaked it all down cold with Greased Lighting, strong mix, hosed it off. then scraped off any big chunks with putty knife and wire brush, then finished spraying it in a self serve car wash. The previous owners never cleaned anything for 100,000 miles. Now it will just get a spray off every month or two.
The best cleaner i have ever used is Castrol Cleaner Degreaser, twice a year I take the wheels off of the vette and my M3 and clean everything with it. With 50/50 solution and a mild brush it will clean it to like new..
after 50k on the M3 the wheels wells are spotless..
on the vette I painted and clearcoated the rear suspension and use just soap and water , but on the front i use the castrol and everything looks as new.
try it, you will be very suprised(just keep it off the paint, I think it is harsh as it burns the hell out of your hands if you have any cuts)
