WINDOW PROBLEM

when i got home i took my door panel apart and inspected my window (not knowing what to look for but everything looked to be in place)...it was still on the track and i could still hear the moror running when i push the button. It was getting dark so i settled for a quick fix...i pulled the window up into position and put some electrical tape on the shaft so that it could not slide back down, (this will not last long)
does anyone know if i need to buy a new motor? or is it something simple to fix? anyone have this problem? I need help....rain is in the forcast for the next week and the window has already slipped about 1/2" and i would really hate to take it to a garage.

The white window ribbon may have very well snapped in half which is why it wont come up.
What you can do now is get a small clamp, worm style and clamp the rod to keep the window up.I did this and the clamp held the glass up until I fixed the problem and got the parts needed.
If the ribbon is good, the gear probably stripped.Youll be able to see once you remove the window track from the door.
However, its more common its the ribbon on these early cars.
Youll need to unbolt the glass off the lift assembly and take it out the door. However,GM uses these cone shaped stops on the edges of the glass sometimes, and they sometimes will not come off. They will spin in place when you go to remove them.
If thats the case, youll have to set the glass carefully inside either along the crash beam or set it on the bottom of the door as you go to remove the window track assembly. The topof the door isnt wide enough to slip the glass out with the stops on them.
Its really a easy job..the track itself will have a few pop rivets that will need to be drilled out and new ones installed when replacing the ribbon if thats whats broken.
Dont forget under the door is 2 or so 10MM bolts that hold the track down securely.
BE sure to scribe marks around every bolt and nut you take off to keep the reinstall easy for alignment.
Let know what you find.
For now,get a clamp on that rod to keep the glass up and be sure its tight.
