In the interim, this is mechanics 101, should be able to idle smoothly and run without backfiring at this point. Am I assuming too much?BTW, SOME header tubes are red, not all of the, and not real red, just on the cusp.
It could be running too rich or lean in closed loop. IMO a scan would help there, have you checked for vac. leaks.
Not yet. Byebyel98 is going to come over and help me out with that. Waiting on his availability.

Unfortunately, I don't have a free weekend until after Easter. If that works for you, come on up!
If it didn't backfire before the exhaust was done, I would guess that it isn't the valves. DOUBLE check the plug wires as this was the cause the last time you had a glowing header and it was running rough. And not just for firing order - make sure the headers didn't burn up one of the wires. Also, sometimes when pulling the wires off of either the plugs or the cap several times, the wire can separate from the crimp inside the boot. Check the plugs again - if the ECM was reading lean from the heated O2 (in closed loop) all this time, then it has been throwing a lot of extra fuel at them; could be carbon fouled.
Are you getting the back fire when you hit the throttle or during steady cruise? A momentary lean condition when you hit the throttle will cause a back fire (a lean pop) and can be solved via the tune. Back firing during steady cruise could be fouled plugs, bad wires (or crossed wires), timing related, heck even bad gas.

Works for me. It's a date....

It did backfire before the exhaust was done, I figured that was a result of the O2 picking up a lean condition and putting down more fuel.
I have an engine scope, I'll hook it up. I just may get a new set of wires. First, I'll check the timing tomorrow. I am sure I nailed it at 6* but I'll double check.

Yes, a steady cruse when I either hit it or take my foot off the gas it will backfire.
OK - make sure everything is mechanically sound (cover all the bases mentioned here), then put her away for a few weeks until the 29th or 30th, whichever day is nicer .
If the motor performs sluggishly, backfires from the intake or exhaust and the headers are glow red, that could mean your timing is set way retarded. I would check and see if you didn't accidentally set the base timing ATDC.

Back asswards. If it's firing through the intake valve before it's closed you are way advanced or the valve isn't closing completely. That would also account for the glowing headers.Check firing order again. You had it wrong last time.

I think it is a nice gesture of byebyeL98 to come and help you out...kudos to him
IMO, I think it would be to your best interest in the real near future to go ahead and get a cable and get your laptop loaded up w/d.log. Since you will need this anyways wether you work w/Alvin or not, it would eliminate many questions/possibilities that are currently going on and in the future.
