Default 84 Vette - Ignition Module / Coil Help

Hey guy's,

Here is the story. I am sad to report that my Crossfire has finely left me stranded. I will add that it did take 10 years and 120k miles to do it. So, I still love my car. It was destined to happen sooner or later.

I was driving down the interstate and the car shut off. I kicked it in neutral and tried to restart to no avail. I pulled over and called my boss in panic as I was on my way to the airport. Was suppose to be in South Florida 4 hours later for a big event. Needless to say I am at home finally with my car. I will not be making the trip.

What I have done so far:

Retrieved codes = the default 12 - no codes
Replaced coil w/ spare from garage = no fire
Replaced Ignition Module from old dizzy = fired up "This module had atleast 80k on it"

I drove car about 1 minute and it back fired pretty loud "Might have blown a muffler off" and then it died.

I pushed car home in saddles as that was what I was wearing. I have no ideas on what to check now.

Do you think the module I replaced it with might have been bad as well? Can a coil cause it to fry?

is what I want to do in order to fix it!

My first "Guess" is timing - maybe jumped a link on the chain ?

The smart ones will chime in soon -- this thread I'll be watching

I kind of though that, but figured I would start with the fuel/spark first. When I replaced the ignition module it ran. So I no longer believe timing is the issue. Currently, I am sure the module is bad, but I need to determine what is frying it. I do not want to buy another 30-50 part just to fry before I can make it out of my neighborhood.

There is an old man who always sits out on his driveway every afternoon. He stared me down as the car was towed into the neighborhood. About 45 mins later I had it running and took it for a spin around block. He practically fell out of his chair when he saw me coming. Must have thought "Man he works fast!!" Then the car backfired in his face and he watched me push it home in dismay.

Did the injectors squirt when you were cranking and it wouldn't start? I am assuming you checked and there was mo spark at the plugs when you were cranking. Have you checked the fuel pressure? I am not suggesting that this is the problem, but the only time mine quit on me, the fuel pump suffered an unexpected and catastrophic cardiac arrest. I have further thoughts, but I'd like to hear the answers to these questions first.

I did not hook a gauge up to it, but it was squirting fuel. I should add that the fuel pump is relatively new. I replaced it before it died on me. Maybe 1 - 1.5 years old. It did not have spark prior to me replacing the ignition module. Once replaced, spark was present for about a minute before dying again.

OK, then it does in fact sound like the module and or the coil. The reason I asked about the injectors pulsing, is beside the fuel system operation, the injector pulsing indicates that the pick up coil inside the distributor is functioning, also. I would perform the component tests outlined in the FSM. Short of that I would take the module and the coil to the auto parts store for testing. Good luck and...

Thanks CFI... I am about to climb in my wifes "Honda" and drive to the parts store.

I did apply the grease to the module before installing.

Off to get tested and purchase more parts

Module test = FAILED

I bought a new module, and used an old coil I had laying around. Everything seems to be working ok! I had them test my MSD coil which they claimed was good. I still put in the coil I removed when I upgraded the ignition components.

Car is running good again!

Thank you all for the help!

Do the new coil and module wire colors match the originals that came out, and each other? Of so...

Colors are the same - but the coil in car was a MSD, so not really the original. I pulled the stocker off the shelf and it appeared to match up even though its like 24yrs old.

Delco and stock replacement coils come with two different color wires. One has red and yellow wires and the other has red and white wires. They are for different applications. The wrong coil for the application will result in reversed polarity. If the module and coil wires match colors, you have a matched set. I don't know how you would verify that with an after market coil. The engine will run just fine with reversed polarity, but the coil won't have as much potential output as the correct coil. That could show up as a misfire at WOT and higher rpms. You probably have all the right parts, but this is just a little info just in case you weren't aware.
