@ the beginning of fall quarter, ooops, been studying for finals too hard, lemme start over. In late Sept. I installed a hypertech thermomaster and 160 degree thermostat. In the past I have heard some negative things about this chip, but to be honest I am quite satisfied with it. I felt a decent improvement in my shiftpoints. I'm not sure about any other 84's but my had a noticable drop in RPM when cruising on the street, almost like OD had kicked in. Now it rides like my girlfriends turbo 350 in her 71 Chevelle, except for the kicks from 1st to 2nd to 3rd. Also, I notice a little more aggressive acceleration and a chirp in second from time to time. My mileage hasn't changed much. I still get about 300 mi. to a tank. Overall I think I'd suggest it to anyone with an 84. Haven't run @ the track yet, but I"m on my way.
And for all I know maybe this chip makes a bigger difference with the ceasefire than with Tuned Port. Hey, since yer here, I'm planning on building a 383 once I sell my brother car. What do ya think? I'll be using the X fire intake. Ported of course. Thanks a bunch. Happy Holidays  :chevy
I think I detect some placebo (sp?) effect here. The ECU in the '84 controls the converter lock up, ONLY. It does not control shift points or quality. Therefore, a "chip" cannot affect shift points or shift feel. The Hypertech chip delays the lock up until about 45 mph to prevent the "hunting" at lower speeds that the stock prom will allow. If you're happy with your chip...GREAT. I ran back to back 1/4's with mine. It was a tick slower in the 1/4. The converter control was nice, but it seemed like an awfully high price (monetary and performance) to pay.
So you didn't notice anything in your Quarter Mile times? Shoot, I hope thats not true. I'm headed toward the track this weekend and I hope I see some kind of improvement.
OH! I noticed! I paid very close attention. The week I installed it, it showed no significant difference in the ET's. I called Hypertech to ask what was the deal with the chip. They told me that I couldn't compare one week to the next. They said I had to make back to back runs to see the improvement. I did as they said. After two warm ups (I drive the car to the track) I installed the Hypertech. Every run I made that night was faster than the run with the Hypertech. It was less than a tenth slower, but slower is slower. Like I said, I couldn't see paying that kind of money just for the improvement in converter control. I sent it back. Afterwards, I changed to a 180 thermostat. I thought the 160 was too cool. I hope you go a second faster. That is just MY experiance.
After my tire warm up, I get NO slippage on a well preped track. On occasion I get a small chirp going into 2nd on the street. The chip was only in the car for a week. Other than converter lock up, there were no perceptable differences in MY car. Remember, I've got a high mileage engine running at over 4000 feet in altitude. It doesn't make enough power to abuse the tires. As an indication, this spring I'll start my 4th racing season on my BFG Drag Radials. That's 4-500 runs so far, AND I leave them on year round. Maybe, your "new" chirp is an indication that your chip is working for you. I hope it is. Mine didn't.
